Columbus - Postmatch

Sweat had a bad game, which frustrates me even more because Mata was sitting on the bench.

Sweat just isn’t very good.

I’d have loved to have Mata and Struna at fullback.

Villa’s PK was poor, poor, poor.

RodWall is back. Dude was cracking heads out there. Love it when he’s busting up the play.

There is no circumstance on the planet in which you should play Shelton. Literally, not a single one. He’s the worst player in the league.

Something Chris M was talking about on the podcast was, "what if these are 'auditions' to raise his value for a winter transfer"

I just think he's being played out of position. He's a CAM or CF at best, not a striker or a winger.
He’s way too dumb on the field to put him in the middle. And it’s not like he makes up for it with moments of technical brilliance.

He’s a shitty player. And Chris M has a shitty opinion if he actually believes that.

So one guy sitting in front of me was going mental the whole game screaming. First he was all over Elfath for every call in the first half.

In the second half he started screaming to put in Lewis, literally screaming his name over and over again. The subs were warming up in front of us and Lewis looked up with a hilarious "what the hell" expression. Then after PV put in Shelton, the guy started berating Patrick every time Shelton fumbled the ball. "This is on YOU Patrick".

Other than that, crowd was into it and the seating on the bench side was good.

Shelton is absolute trash and I have no idea why he gets minutes. I thought during the season he was trying to build depth for later in the season but TODAY... in a meaningful game... That piece of shit who assaults my eyes with every step should be left on the bench.

Sounds like the guy knew what he was talking about

I'm going to channel PV and say I was "really quite pleased" with the chances NYCFC had in the first half. It was a pretty typical City performance of way outplaying the team, giving up a transition goal against the run of play and fighting back to go up 2-1.

In the second half, yeeesh. Columbus was straight out dealing for the first 15 minutes of the second half and the corner kick goal was cover your eyes awful. Speaking of dealing, left WAY too much space for Higuain to run the show. How many times was he either with acres of space or passing through a retreating backline. That type of space will kill you in the playoffs.

Glad the penalty was given (about freaking time) and double glad that Villas miss didn't hurt in any way (Grazie Gio). I'd rather have Villa miss now than in the playoffs where margins are thinner.

Speaking of misses, Villa was 2 goals behind Nikolic for the boot. The missed PK and that otherworldly volley save. In another world those go in, roll to a 4-2 victory and all is well. But for pete's sake start converting those chances.

I’m still trying to figure out how a foul wasn’t called when Jack danced through 5 Columbus players and lost the ball after ending up on the ground. Any team that gets embarrassed like that immediately takes a foul to stop it and the Ref missed it.

You were by me and CatNYC ?

So I broke down and took my son. We sat in 140. Really liked Citi Field. The entire lower bowl, less maybe the home plate seats, was entirely full. And loud. I thought that crowd was fantastic today. And I thought the stadium acoustics were better. Food was better, but the concessions were incredibly understaffed. The parking lot was a clusterfuck. They were not prepared.

Thank God for Villa. Callens was huge. Worst game for Sean Johnson this season. Thiught Brillant was solid. Sweat was not good. White was very strong defensively, and of course cost us on the offensive side of the ball. Ring was terrific. Pick up of the offseason for me and our 2nd most valuable player. Herrera showed some flashes but we didn't miss anything when he came off. Maxi has gotten worse as the season goes on. That worries me. He's not a DP level #10 in this league at the moment. He is brutal in the final third. Now, could he play deeper next to a traditional 6 like Ring? Maybe. I like him as a guy that pings the ball around the field. I liked him deeper when we went to a flat 4-4-2 later in the match.

Wallace was ok, not great. Liked his stint as a CF when Villa went wide left. Harrison was good. I would imagine he came out because they wanted to protect his minutes some.

Matarrita needs to start next weekend. Shelton wouldn't pull the trigger on a shot at the end of the match that Harrison puts on target. I did like him as a CF paired with Villa. That's his natural position. Lewis continues to be a game changer. Came on too late.

Steffen had himself a game
