How does it work? I click on the tree icon but then just get the BBcode image tags like this:

What do you need to do next to upload an image?

Not sure if the shout box is is different from a regular message but the img tag is for a URL for a web location. I upload all my stadium overlay photoshops to a folder on my web site so I use the img tag for the URL of each image. In a regular message though there's also an option to just upload the file, which gives you a thumbnail at the bottom. You can then put the thumbnail in the body of the message or show the full image in the message.

Not sure if any of the upload stuff applies to the shout box though.

So you do have to upload it elsewhere and then put the url between the tags. I can do that. I was just assuming it would work more like the message system but this is fine. Thx.

For the img tag, yes. There may still be a way to do a direct file upload though.

I'm pretty certain the only way to insert an image into it is via the IMG tag.
I use IMGUR when I need to upload offsite.

Thanks.
I admit I saw so many people doing it yesterday I assumed there must be a more direct way because I didn't think so many people would go to the trouble.
I think you can choose an file from your phone maybe. I want to say I've done it that way when on mobile. Couldn't swear to it, though.

ETA - and now I see your screenshot is mobile, so obviously, I was wrong. Sorry.

Been thinking about this for a while on and off and this is completely doable on an iPhone. I have an ftp app called Transmit on my phone, so what I can do is tap any photo to select it and then tap the Share button. From there I can tap the Transmit icon and ftp it up to my web folder. So basically three taps once I'm looking at my photo and it's up on the web. From there it's easy enough to post the URL in the shout box.

And if this is something you're going to want to do hundreds of times I'm sure it could be totally automated using the Workflow app (free now that Apple bought the company). Look at your photo, tap the workflow you've set up, file gets renamed, transferred, and URL gets copied to the clipboard. Easy peasy. Sorta. I already have a similar workflow set up on my Mac using Hazel. All I have to do is drop a photo into a special folder and it gets uploaded to a web folder, the image gets opened in my browser just to make sure, and the URL gets copied to the clipboard so I can just paste it into a post here. Super simple to use and saves a lot of hassle when compared to manually uploading images for the board.

As an alternative I'm sure you could share it to Flickr or Tumblr or something and get the URL from there.

In fact, now that I think of it maybe I'll work on setting up this (shareable) workflow so I can post on-the-spot photos from the stadium into the shout box when I'm at a match.

OK, so I've looked into this and it looks like there's not really a free solution. Flickr would be OK but it doesn't seem to be included in Workflow. Tumblr is but there's no simple way to extract the URL for just the image. They really want you to link to the post and make getting to the image really difficult, and on top of that there's actually five image sizes all with unique URLs that would have to be calculated/extracted. Twitter is similar: easy to post to, not easy to extract only the image URL. So it looks like the only workable answer is ftp, which is fine but not free.

So the bottom line is that this can be totally automated to work with just a few taps but you'll need the Transmit app to make it happen.

And oh yeah, I'll have to get it to actually work first. Minor detail.

Too bad about Flickr. I really like using it for this because I can designate photos as Hidden, which means people visiting my Flickr account can't see them, but they can still be accessed directly by URL and posted on forums etc. Very handy.
Thanks for following through on this.

IMGUR can do that too. You can make an album and designate if said album is public or not.

I did look at imgur as well. It's similar to tumblr in that it's easy to upload and then get a link to a page but you can't get a link to a specific image file (which is what the forum needs). For purposes of the board it still seems easiest to upload an image to your own web site but not everybody has one of course. If you do though it's a solvable problem. This looks like one of those times when I can give you two of the things you want but not all three at the same time. There's easy to upload, easy to download, and free. Can't seem to find all three together, alas.

Test 2 - for reals

OK, it works. That was posted from my phone. I tapped the photo in the Photos app, tapped the share button, tapped the Run Workflow button, then tapped the Upload to imgur button I made. I then went to Safari on my phone, tapped the image button in a new post here, and then just pasted directly into the image field and here we are.

That sounds way more complicated than it really is. Basically, look at the photo in the Photos app, three taps, paste the link into the forum in Safari and the image is posted. It's a little bit fiddly but it's pretty easy to do.

So, totally free. You need the imgur app and an account there, the Workflow app, and two seconds to set up the workflow (which is only two steps, although I should be able to post it somewhere so it can be downloaded by others).

ETA: And a hat tip to EganSoccerWords derek_villa who pointed me in the right direction. It was doable with my ftp app, which is a good thing to have if you need one, but this way is free.
