Expansion Rumors Megathread

Don't forget about the Panthers abysmal attendance. They do have incredible incentives for the few season ticket holders that they have.

But to be fair, the arena is way outside of Miami proper. Basically the same situation as Dallas and Chicago.

I'm not a Panthers fan but I can say with a great deal of certainty that the location of BB&T has very little to do with low attendance. The arena is right off the Sawgrass Expressway which runs into I-75 and not that far from Miami.

And why would they even want a hockey arena in a city (Miami) that is primarily populated by Cubans, Dominicans. Venezuelans and Colombians?

Miami is just a really bad sports town. If you're not the U (and to some extent the Dolphins),no one cares unless it's playoff time.

I think we should give miami a chance.
People said Atlanta was a bad sports town as well, but Atlanta united show that if you do something properly, then people will turn up.

Yeah, but since ATLU was announced they had a massive fan following and support. I don't see that in Miami and they are so close. They could be the 1st expansion team no to sell out their opener.

I think if Miami get the nod, they should postpone coming in for a season so they can get things right.

Agree. I think a Miami club turns out to be a failure. Positive note: one of the other expansion sites will buy out and move the franchise. And then, we'll finally be done with those clowns.

To spend the money required to start a franchise with no evidence of notable fan support is insane.
Beckham is spending a fraction of the cost ($20M versus $150M), bringing in others to share said cost, and if it doesn't pan out he can sell the team for likely a profit - he's essentially getting one giant stock option from MLS, and exercising it is a no brainer with where current teams are valued, even the crappiest of the organizations. Per Forbes last year, the Rapids are the runt of the league and they're still worth $110M.

How much have they spent to date aside from the buy-in? How much will their cut of a stadium be?

Right now, I agree with you. He can cut bait and run and be fine. But if the fan support is as weak as some claim, there's going to be a lot of money spent and $110mm won't make everybody whole of the team flops.

The sale won't be for $110 if sold - that's just the value of the crappiest org from an operational/revenue standpoint. Going rate for a team is $150M. Beckham wouldn't sell for less than that because the demand well exceeds the supply. He potentially could see the price rise even higher ala a bidding war (one that MLS would have to ratify and approve of the purchasing group/city). The stadium is definitely an issue for sunk costs, but that's what LLC's are for and I'm sure there's a business accounting method for them to come out with zero debt on it.

EDIT: oops just read this ....so is there a deadline for this? i feel like someone who does not make the expansion cut will want to buy it

Don't understand your question about deadline?

I'm not saying Beckham is selling now, just that if he can't make Miami work because the fans never materialize and the team has shitty numbers, then he'll sell to get out and still probably be in the black. There are going to be 3-4 teams that are desperate for an entry to MLS that will pay $150-200M for the only golden ticket available.

because this has been going on for some time now....there has to be a point where something has to happen. i doubt beckham has no expiration date on his deal for expansion. after this round of expansion i assume something has to happen ( either Miami happens or sell to next highest bidder)
