Ronald Matarrita [Defender]

I don't know that we need to get a new LB desperately, although I can see the argument. If Sweat gets injured then maybe we see Wallace there, opening up a spot for Lewis or Tommy when Maxi is fit again. If that's what we're banking on, I do hope we get them some serious minutes before Sweat inevitably breaks down just in time for playoffs, though ;)

I have a feeling that the coaching staff views RJ as the LB backup and RB split between RJ/White. Three guys for two positions. Hell, even Mikey may now be in the mix for RB time if we play a team that's horrible on defense and doesn't know how to press.

Eh. Don't love those options. I vote new left back signing.

Blowing a whole season from injury pretty much means we can't rely on matarrita next year either. LB needs to be signed this summer

For Fuchs sake guys, I'm sure they had a plan in place but Mata's injury could kill things with no GAM from his potential transfer and Pirlo's status is the bigger question mark. There'd have to be some serious good will from the player to come in at a reduced salary for a year if cap space isn't freed up from those two.

I think LB is our biggest need, being both weak and thin.
Question is: Do we have any salary money.

Pay them whatever you can where they have a DeJong like contract where if they play an x amount of games, they'll get x salary the following year

Mm. I think that if Mata was fit, we'd still prefer a right back, so this feels a little short term to me, unless Mata was definitely getting sold, which is even further off at this point.

Having said that, with MLS being what it is, who knows how long it will be before we have as good of a shot at the Cup as we do this year. Specifically, who is gonna be the next Villa?

I would wanna work through a decent number of scenarios to land on something more definitive but I'm not paid to do this :)

I don't know how you walk through the line of reasoning you just did and come up with anything different than me, as that was exactly my line of thinking. I was all in on RB being the biggest need until this crapsicle got shoved into our mouths.

The MLS part you mention and not knowing when we'll have another chance as good as what we appear to have this year is one of the main reasons the club needs to just suck it up and pay Pirlo (off the books) to retire ASAP.

Drop him, and I think we can have a LB and RB signed this window.

But barring having big money available, there are bound to be a few Central American guys that have a decent Gold Cup. They'd likely be cheap. Too bad Cuba isn't in it this time around. Always nice when there are defections and you can just snatch them up at minimum charge.

Fair. I'm basically hedging because I can't keep all the scenarios in my head and I mostly read and post on the forums on-the-go.

You know what Angelino is up to?

(Okay - I've maxed out my shitposting, I guess. For now.)

Is this the last year of Matarrita's contract? If so, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

If you trust transfermarkt, his contract ends Dec 31, 2017. No idea if we hold an option. We could be fcked - the wrong kind.

Pretty much trust transfermrkt more than anything else. The only updates they accept seem to come from sources that have at least demonstrated some sort of insider knowledge.

There was a massive yearlong discussion in their Pulisic valuation, with tons of people arguing the 5 million value they had assigned him was stupid low. But they still would not change it.

Not infallible, but I trust it more than reporting - probably even more than club reported info.

So we are screwed. We have to try to sell him as is, or use up next year's AM budget on a new contract for him. then, best case is he plays a few good playoff matches and we sell him over winter break, when we still wouldn't have many LB choices in the market.

Fucking left back man. It's a bitch all over the world. It's why Warshaw isn't completely crazy to say Kellyn Acosta should have just made that position his. Left backs with his skill are hard to find.
