U17 World Cup - 2018 India

With todays results we are guaranteed to advance to the knockout round -- with 6 points we can't be any worse than the 4th worst 3rd place team.

Colombia 3 - 1 US FINAL

Colombia finish 2nd in the group. US finish 3rd in the group. We are still through to the knockout round but after two good games, things are falling apart. We have two days less rest if we were to finish 2nd.

Hackworth and Ramos should be out.

Jeez that’s a third game flameout. Wtf?!?

Anybody know if this was a rotated lineup or -all the true starters?

A couple of changes, but I'd say "starters".
So now the question is whether they were tired at the end, like most US teams that rely too much on the top 13-14 for entire tournaments, or if they just got beaten because they weren’t as good?

Soap box: The US program as a whole has an awful history of burning players out in cups while bringing guys they aren’t prepared to use.

Generally poor tactics, poor subs, mis-use of players. So typcial US coaching is mostly at fault.

We have gone from a national side that is greater than the sum of its parts to one where the opposite is true.

Is losing to Colombia really a flameout?
I think going from the drivers seat for the 1st position in the group (only a tie was needed - where have we heard that before?) to needing a coin flip to determine either 2nd/3rd Place is a flameout.

So if they lost to the best team in the group in the first match, rather than the third, you'd be much more upbeat?

Not sure what that has to do with the situation since they didn’t lose to the best team in the group.

But they could have lost and still finished 2nd if they had stopped the bleeding and not hemorrhage’s the 3rd goal. Being in 3rd is not a mark of success after two wins to lead off.

Colombia's reward for beating us is a knockout round match against Germany while we face Paraguay or Iran. (Update: Paraguay).

An amazing match by the United States winning 5-0 versus Paraguay with a hat trick by Tim Weah and an assist hat trick by Andrew Carleton (ATL).

US will play either Japan or England (their match is Tuesday, October 17) on Saturday, October 21.
