2018 General MLS Transfer Rumors

Villalba makes less than $1mm.

Then they really are stacked. We’re not too bad either now that we know we’re keeping Yangel. If we can get a quality RB and DP striker or wing we can still compete with ATL for shield, might even like our starting XI more. Even if I believe ATL is going about their team building in a much better way. (Though I may change my mind if our academy starts pumping out studs and the last few years was just treading water).

I get a kick out of everyone that thinks because we have CFG backing we’re going to spend all this crazy money. The only cash we’ve shelled out is in terms of DP salary and only one of them has done a damn thing.

We actually have been one of the biggest spenders tho. It's just that we waste it on players living off their past achievements, not current or future ones (sans Villa).

First 2018 transfer news that I’ve seen calls for a 2018 thread.

Anyone familiar with him? Big transfer fee and causing lots of Twitter buzz.

that Tata effect plus arthur blank willing to shell out the cash

it also doesnt help when the rumors of our DP targets are 32-35 yr olds on a free transfer fee.....like wtf....but we are not man city so they wont spend for us ( not sure how melbourne gets treated)....though to be "fair" i guess we can potentially get the Yangel's etc that CFG buys and those tend to be good prospects but outside of that we wont get a very good south american prospect strictly for us.

They're going about this the right way, especially now that you can write off the DP/Transfer Cost in year one of the contract

ATL also has the benefit of a lot more TAM and GAM entering the league than when we did. Need to take that into consideration when evaluating the deals they can do out of the gate vs what we had to do.

Looks like they treat Melbourne the same. As in, biggest spender, but not very efficiently as they are good not great (4th last year, lost in first round of playoffs; sitting 3rd this season).

In fairness, Melbourne City have had the squad to dominate the league for the last 2-3 seasons. Every year they get made odds-on favourites to walk the league, and every year they simply can't be any more than half of the sum of their parts. That said, they have always been hamstrung by a woefully bad manager, who has thankfully now left.

So you're telling me we're the sole after thought. Fuck this.

No, I'm saying that in the A-League, the kind of recruits that NYCFC has also been recruiting are easily some of the best players in the league. Outside of Melbourne City, no A-League club has the resources to scout outside of Aussie players at home, Aussie players abroad, the occasional stand-out player in the Asian Champions League and a few handfuls of European throwaway players looking for a new start. Simply by the act of recruiting from South America, Melbourne City automatically got upgraded to "best squad in the league". It's only really poor management which has made them consistently place 3rd/4th (out of 10) rather than first.

Bruno Fornaroli is a good player, for instance, but he likely wouldn't be beyond a 10-goal-a-season striker in MLS, maybe would be your very definition of a hit-and-miss recruit. As soon as he went to Melbourne City, he broke league records for goals scored in his first season. It's simply a case of scope - the bigger a team gets, the more special their recruits have to be to stand out. Melbourne City and NYCFC have the same access to recruitment resources, it's just that much easier to get it right in the A-League.
