Umm... We have that going on right now in the CCL, and no one can be bothered to televise it in the US. And this one is a meaningful match for a real trophy. Ass backwards thinking.
Exactly. I would rather them help build CCL than throwing money away at this makeshift game.

Yeah, I get it more if teams from the other countries in CONCACAF were competitive in CCL, but they aren't. Its usually at the end, turned out to be a Liga MX tournament and until recently the MLS teams are really starting to compete.

And there is no sign of the Costa Rican or Honduran, or other leagues becoming competitive in CCL.

wha? they made semi's handful of times before MLS started raiding the league past couple of years. they are the last non mexican team to win this tournament (albeit in a different format)

Yes, you are correct. 4 Costa Rican clubs have made the semis over the last 9 years (possible 18 teams finishing in those spots). The last time this occurred was in 2014-2015 before TAM was introduced to MLS.

Since then, the quality of MLS has increased dramatically and Liga MX has not dropped off either. You have seen top Costa Rican talent come here to MLS (I'm not certain about Liga MX but it wouldn't surprise me).

With the new knockout stage format and the quality changes, do you really see a club from Costa Rica or somewhere else competing in CCL? I sure as hell don't. And its only going to get worse.

since the raid started the answer is probably no, still i dont think we should just create another tournament just to have 1 and 2 when it still happens in the regional tournament, just for some more tickets sold.

That's exactly what I'm saying. We already see this in CCL. If CCL was a much more competitive mix including Costa Rican, Honduran, El Salvadoran, etc. teams, then I can see a "reason" for this. But CCL already turns into Liga MX vs MLS, so why need another?

I see a true benefit to a guaranteed match between the league champions from Mexico and MLS. CCL has rarely given us that due to lack of MLS competitiveness. And though it perhaps seems odd to create this game just as MLS is reaching near parity, there is still a decent chance that the CCL final each year will be all Mexico or all MLS even when MLS is fully equal. It will depend on draws and semifinal results. Plus even when there is a Mexico-MLS matchup, it probably won't be between league champions. This game will probably be redundant to the CCL final maybe 10% of the time. So why not. It will get great ratings in Mexico and on Univision or Telemundo, while we Anglos will wonder why we have to stream it.

Agree. It’s not at all the same thing to me. I think it could be fun.

i dont know...this is happening in september....granted is only one game...but assume that toronto is fighting for bye in playoffs or worse yet they have injury bug....are they really going after this one off instead of trying to get the bye or risk more injury than needed?

i mean look at us last year we had injuries or waiting for people to come back, we needed more rest not an extra game. you could say there is tam etc players, but they are there in CCL as well.

i disagree on CCL,, if this year is any indication it will be mls vs liga mx going forward now so we will get those matchups in this new format, sure some will not be champion vs champion some will but thats chance. I dont see this being an issue in other regions. Lastly, everyone uses the preseason excuse or lack of games....yet there is potential to have 3/4 semifinalists from MLS this year.

Good points by mgarbowski mgarbowski but I will say that I still do think its a bit redundant (for example TFC just played the Liga MX champs during their CCL quarters), but I will never complain about having extra soccer to watch.

And more competitive matches would generally help the team and in turn MLS.

Even though it would be a meaningless match, I'm more excited about the all-star game. I think that is a neat idea that can be exciting as long as players keep cool heads about themselves.
