Today Listening to the early evening headlines news, " the death of a footballer had died on the pitch"' shocked me. I waited patiently for 6 pm news. I had never heard nor considered that such tragic, event could happen or has happened . The only channels that covered it were Telemundo and Univision (whose report was less than 30 Seconds)
I went online for more news , and worse! Was astounded to learn , that these deaths are not as rare and some are so freakish that is scary
I am dismayed that the "Beautiful Game " can be deadly too. I feel very deeply for the futbolista and his family As of now , I was not able to find the name, country/league and I, was so troubled by the deaths of those who have lost their lives on the pitch.
, that I just turned off the TV.

It happened yesterday to a G-League basketball player from a Detroit Pistons affiliate. He suffered cardiac arrest at the end of the game.

It happens a few times a year, if you count football around the globe and include non-professional games, and I've heard of at least half a dozen examples of it happening in other sports, too, just from the ones where I remember hearing the news story. The thing about high-intensity sports is that these days they require training yourself to such a high level that you are ultimately at risk of cardiac issues - some peoples' hearts can just give out from the constant work. Sure, it's very rare, but even if it only happens to one player in a million each year then with the sheer number of registered sportsmen there are in the world, it's bound to happen to someone in the not-so-distant future. And then there are the sports which involve objects which can hit you, as seems to be the case with the guy I assume you are talking about, TD.

RIP, all the same.

did he really die because the ball hit his chest though? didn't look like it hit him that hard...

I didn’t see the play, so I’m going based on your description that the ball hit him.... I’ve read about other incidents like this (a ball hitting the chest) where the player went in to cardiac arrest even though the impact was seemingly insignificant. It had something to do with the timing of the impact interrupting the body’s natural rhythm of the heart, and that jarring was enough to cause the arrest. Some crazy physics involved with wave frequency, which is above my head, and it amounted to the wrong force (however light) hitting at absolutely the wrong instant.

I have read similar reports, and can explain this with the same level or lack of understanding and detail. But bottom line I believe this is exactly right.

The one , I am referring was futbol/soccer game. 30 seconds or so of news It was on Telemundo, Monday 3/26 early evening news. it was so fast that I was not able to catch the player's name. I am assuming it was on South America minor league since it was broadcasted by hispanic network

I am making a correction in my assumption above it happened in SA. You got it right Falastur Falastur , it happened in a Croatian 3rd tier league.
I personally find it sad, these tragic deaths do happen. We fans only get to see the glamour of our beloved sport . RIP Bruno Boban

your explanation ( although is no consolation to the family ) does make make sense . One of the most horrifying was that the player die from swallowing his own tongue after colliding with another player. After learning these , I did not wanted to read, and see any more.

I have come to the horrible suspicion that in the "Best interest " of all sports, tragic incidents like this are not mentioned in the news
