New FIFA Club World Cup

News came out in the last couple of days about a new Club World Cup, to take place every 4 years.

I’m all for replacing Confed Cup.

What do you guys think about it? That initial field sounds like so much fun.

I don’t love the extra wear and tear, but it could be quite a spectacle if teams go for it. And I guess they will if they are competing for a share of $2b.

Eta: I wonder what it will take to qualify from this side of the world...would be cool to see an MLS club involved. And by an MLS club, I mean a vastly improved NYCFC.

Confederations Cup is for National teams as a run-up to the World Cup itself, nothing to do with clubs. I think its necessary as a testing mechanism for the World Cup nations to help test out infrastructure on a smaller level. Also helps show how fucked they may potentially be the next summer, in regard to transportation and hotels, etc.

Now, if you want to get rid of the CWC currently held each year in December, that would be interesting. Take the past 4 CL winners and runners up?

Note* I didn't read the article as I haven't signed up for the Times. I presume they break down what clubs are eligible or how to gain entrance to the newly formatted CWC??

24 teams. As of now, 12 are decided.

There would be 12 clubs from Europe and Fifa’s preferred option for the first edition of the tournament is to invite those clubs who have won at least three Champions Leagues or European Cups. That would include Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Inter Milan. Juventus would also be invited on the basis of having won two European Cups and two Intercontinental titles.

Seriously, it sounds like FIFA wants to try to be the entity that gets this off the ground in order to pip UEFA. They're battling over several things.

Pretty much.

Infantino has realised that FIFA need to increase revenue and cant rely on the World cup every four years.

Arsene Wenger has said its only a matter of time as the other European clubs need a super league to stop the flow of money coming onto the premier league.

His suggestion was that normal league play would be on Wednesdays and the Super League would be played on weekends for TV money.
