Alexander Ring [Midfielder]

Didn't Kjbert say this same thing about Ring's injury. I've said this to other fans at games and they think I'm crazy. We've also discussed somewhere on here to rest Ring for the last games of the regular season as we've playing easy opponents. If Dome wants to "win the MLS" then it's the playoffs that matter more. Shut him down as we're likely not getting that 1-2 seed and not moving below 4.
Yes, it has been obvious and discussed a lot on here. He looks like he's playing his heart out to play at 75%. But the confirmation from the coach is an important one (at least for our own purposes of consideration). We can now definitively say that they should knife (or rest?) him now, get him back when it counts.

Wow. Can you post the article with the coach's comments? Not that I don't believe you, I think it would be interesting to see the direct quote.

He said this in the streamed press conference today afternoon local time. I can't find it online elsewhere. He was asked about Ring's absence, and said it was a mutual decision that he wouldn't take part in those games.

the problem is that if we rest him we lose alot. Herrera not being there hurts a lot. Im sure if Herrera was around im sure Ring gets less minutes if this injury is still ongoing. all we have is Ofori, Amagat seems like a big no. Kwame is not that good. All we have after that is Sands. I do want to believe Sands gets minutes in September with all injuries going on.

It’s not a long recovery (if they do it right, sorry former players I don’t remember your names) so they should have done it a while ago so he can recover and get back to top fitness. I’m nervous they’re trying to time it after we have x-number of points, but that could be too late by making the injury worse and/or not being fit in time for the playoffs. Just do it and let the next man up (hopefully Sands) do his job.

Agreed. If the medical decision is to let it ride and let him play through it for the season, that's one thing (well, one thing, with risks of aggravating the injury, losing him for the season, or just having a 75% Ring). But if the decision is to operate at some point, I sure hope it is immediately, as it should have been previously, as you said. It could be the hybrid of that, to play with it and see how it goes/feels, and operate if necessary. I would think that's the worst alternative because it holds all of the downsides of the two other options.

Worth remembering that we have 3 weeks off at the beginning of October. That would be a good time to rest him if we aren't going to make things worse in the meantime.

We have a fairly strange record down the stretch.

- 1o days off (right now)
- 3 games in 8 days
- 13 days off
- 3 games in 8 days
- 21 days off
- games on the last 2 Sundays

So, another option would be to do something like give him the next 3 games off so that he gets a full month (31 days) of rest.

Now I found clip from a Finnish newspaper (link in Finnish). The head coach doesn't mention the hernia in this snippet, though. Here's a translation of his comment on Ring:

"Also absent is Alexander Ring from the US MLS in New York City.

- He is not fully fit to train or play. He is capable of playing but not 100%. Yesterday we had a conversation and we said together that if he is not 100% fit, it's not fair that he will join, Kanerva said."

Thanks for the source. I think Mike's got the right read here:

You really think the NT coach was going to take an injured player if NYCFC hadn’t of begged them off?

Ring is the best option we have, even if injured, but I’d be surprised if a 75%Ring is better than Finland’s next option since they have their entire pool to choose from. I think the coach straight out didn’t want to be responsible for a hurt player getting worse on his watch while knowing he had other options.

Also worth keeping in mind that national team duty is very important to Ring. Now, that might be less true for friendlies, but he has said publicly that its a priority.

Actions speak louder than words, though. Not calling Ring a liar obviously, but Finland is kinda hapless. Hasn't he left camp early multiple times and also turned down past call ups?

If memory serves me right, the game vs. Iceland where he scored that beauty of a free kick was his only international match last year, and this year he hasn't played in any of them. That tells quite a lot, as he had already 43 caps before he moved over to New York.

He was in one other one, and then also suffered multiple injuries. Per Transfermarkt:

1/19/17 - Friendly - not in squad
3/24/17 - WCQ - 84' played
3/28/17 - Friendly - not in squad
6/7/17 - Friendly - not in squad
6/11/17 - WCQ - not in squad
9/2/17 - WCQ - 90' played (this is the one where he scored the FK)
9/5/17 - WCQ - toe injury
10/6/17 - WCQ - not in squad
10/9/17 - WCQ - not in squad
11/9/17 - Friendly - not in squad
1/11/18 - Friendly - not in squad
3/23/18 - Friendly - knee injury
3/26/18 - Friendly - knee injury
6/5/18 - Friendly - not in squad
6/9/18 - Friendly - not in squad

Note for those last two WCQs, Finland had already been eliminated.

Lots of discussion going on in Finland, whether Ring should be included in Finland's EURO2020 squad, now that they've qualified for a major finals for the first time. Most fans seem to think Ring is a ****ing traitor who shouldn't be forgiven, although few argue that he'd strengthen the team immensely. Ring himself hasn't said anything in public and I doubt he will, because that doesn't seem to be his style. One rag suggested that he's bad influence in the dressing room, which seems a bit odd with him being the skipper at NYCFC.
The Euro finals takes place in June. Were Ring to rejoin the Finland party, he'd surely be away from NYCFC over a month.

Why would he be a traitor?

Why would he be a traitor?
He "retired" from the National team. Fans/People probably translated that as him betraying the team by not being there for them during the qualification period due to his retirement. It's hogwash, but there are some fans that will feel slighted by the smallest of things. He probably didn't want to travel every few months in the middle of his club season nor leave his family. I see where they're coming from, but it's incredibly stupid.

if Zlatan didnt get called back to sweden for the WC after they qualified without him, i dont think Ring will. well see in the season leading up to the tournament, but a very good indicator would be the march friendlies. if he is not getting called up he aint going.

on the other hand, if romania does qualify mitri is gone for sure for a month.
