Official Vent Thread

I'm in the process of buying a car.

PS: If you don't recognize this as a desperate cry of unrestrained rage and venting, then you've never bought a car.
I freggin hate the process - my wife and I ended up leasing two Scions because you didn't have to haggle and do the whole song & dance with the dealer - the price was the price

If we go to buy a car, we'll probably try one of those sites like Vroom or something - have been hearing good things about them

I'm using the AmEx/TrueCar quote service, and will visit a dealer (or 2) tomorrow. It's claiming to simplify things, but I just don't trust it. If I get through the weekend without walking out of a dealer because I know they're scamming me, and/or screaming at them, I will be pleasantly shocked.

I used them. Worked fine. Just don’t get bullied by them behind closed doors for the extended warranty. They put the full court press on during that and repeatedly refused to take “no” as my answer.

Same experience, they try to get you with the warranty at an "incredible" rate, and just keep upping the warranty length and coverage, while giving you a "discounted" rate than what they print out on the paper.

It's funny. The one thing they've never pulled on me to date is the warranty hard sell. If they do that, it will be annoying, but I can hold out. I'm more concerned they try to pad the quote with undisclosed fees and charges. I have a verbal telephone assurance (HA!) that my only fee add-ons will be DMV costs and sales tax. We'll see. If they honor that, this could be the best car buying experience I've had in 20+ years. My best ally is it is end of month and new sales are reportedly flat, so I'm hoping they are motivated.

The truecar quote is locked. They try to say anything different (than what you mentioned as add ins) you can walk out and report to truecar.

My lease is up in a year. I'm considering buying a certified used car and holding it for 2-3 years before the certification expires. Then selling and repeating. It seems the price difference over those 2-3 is much lower than my lease payments monthly. I'd also love to just purchase without financing and not have to worry about a car payment every month anymore. Am I being smart or stupid?

Generally that's a smart move I think. I would just want to check on the expected residual value of a car that is presumably 4-6 years old and had 2 owners. I don't even know if that matters but I would check.
I buy new because I keep my cars forever. The least amount of time I ever owned a car before disposing of it has been 14.5 years. I figure I'm entitled to actual new after I keep a car that long.

Yeah, beauty of today's technology is I can check that pretty easily. How I came up with the idea. As long as the range of sale prices checks out, and I'm still under the dealer's certification, I should be good. I like to drive different cars. Theoretically, I can have a different car every year this way, as long as I play the game correctly.

You hold onto your cars, like I hold onto my underwear. I got pairs from the Clinton administration lying around in my drawers! Maybe that should be my next upgrade...

A probably 10 year old kid is wearing a Red Sox jersey in the elevator ride up in my building. He sees my NYCFC vest and asks if I like soccer. I say, yes. I ask him, do you know the team? He responds, yes, but I root for the Red Bulls.

Would’ve smacked him in the face if his mother and younger sister weren’t with him. (Sarcasm).

Chelsea now wearing Man City sky blue. What the heck?!?!

I find the willingness of multiple people on this form to entertain league conspiracy theories when this team has completely self-imploded borderline lunatic. Unless MLS paid off OGC Nice to hire Vieira, then how does anything else play into it? Do you think 5-6 more PKs scattered over the last 33 games would mean we're playing better?
