Update On The Third Rail.

Also, the past few games people have been "celebrating" goals by throwing beers all over the crowd. Not helping.

Things that were thrown from the Supporters' Section into section 136 today:

A half full beer (Hey, I'm an optimist) and two pairs of sunglasses.

All three made it down to rows 1 - 3. No goals were being celebrated people just seemed fed up and decided that the best way to take out their frustration was to throw things at other supporters.

I had a couple friends attending their first match and felt embarrassed for the club. I was actually more disappointed with the third rail than the team, which at this point is pretty hard to do.

Edit: The "fuck security" chant that lasted for about 3 minutes was pure class as well.

I was in 236 and was embarrassed by the people behind me who tossed the drinks into 136 and who had a number of juvenile comments for Columbus's goalkeeper. I don't mind a bit of taunting but it was "Steve Clark, eat a bag of dicks" "Steve Clark, how would you like a dick sandwich, why don't you have two" &c.

Don't know whether they were Third Rail members but they were not 236 ticket holders because I heard them discussing sitting in that section "from now on" (much to my disappointment)

Saw on twitter that police tased two guys and security had someone else in a headlock

Yeah, I've kind of had it with the Third Rail and the supporters section. It's supposed to be the best way to experience the game, but last match the capos were literally screaming at people who were singing "out of turn." And perhaps the only reason there wasn't any smoke this time is that we didn't score enough goals for it. Don't think I'll be sitting there next season. It's worth the extra $200 that a regular seat will cost me just to avoid things like the almost riot that happened near the end of the match today when people started getting pulled out of the section by security. Extra bonuses: I'll have an actual seat, nobody will soak me in beer in celebration, and I won't have to deal with shitheads yelling at me because I'm actually watching the game instead of facing right and jumping up and down like an idiot during the 61st minute.

Oh well, I guess I'm not as good a superfan as they are. Bummer.

^^ This is a prime example of how soccer supporter culture in the United States is an absolute joke. (No offense third rail)

Why does there have to be a designated area of "ultra fans" who act like complete and total idiots with coordinated chants?
Why can't we just have an entire stadium filled with loud and passionate fans?

I disagree with some of the sentiment behind what your statement, although I agree with it in part and much of what you were replying to.

In my opinion, we need a coordinated section for two main reasons. Firstly, it gives a congregation point for fans desiring to be intimately involved (hopefully in productive manners) with the team and culture, and second, it gives a focal point for the remainder of the stadium to join in with, when and if it's done right.

I wonder, since our teams here do not have the community connections of those in other countries, whether that negates, along with the recency, any stadium-wide connections. But in either case, I think those things will come.

Insofar as the behavior being labeled as "ultra" - I've spoken on that since the start of the season and agree with many of the points made above. I can say that these past two months, when this behavior really picked up, has been sobering to me, and I feel that if we could've bottled late May and moved from it in a productive manner, we would be awesome.

Hopefully we can return to that now that many of the people who were silent before a speaking up more.

We don't have that YET because that takes time to develop. We'll get there.

I heard more singing coming from (what I gauged to be) behind the benches (103 - 104 & 202 - 204) yesterday than I had in any previous game.

That was more of a comment to American soccer fans in general. Not specifically NYCFC.

I am new attending a stadium on a regular basis and possibly naive about fan behavior on stadiums. I am dismayed and disconcerted about the unsportmanship behavior that you witnessed. In all honesty some members of security can be nasty or rude and I say this, from personal experience. If you knew me you will know I am no threat to any one, yet I had a one small incident with a security member. Just because In this age of terrorism I did not made an issue of it. and left it as "She was doing her job" but it still rankles me. Overall Security does behave very courteously and professionally. I am not condoning the fan behavior but its a given that a few individual fans can be raucous and drunk especially in a large venue where they feel they can be anonymous and get away with it.

I have 2 questions.
1- In Supporters Section do only Third Rail members are allowed to seat ?
2- Are this Really Third Rail members? Can there be a possibility of infiltration by disgruntled members or former members that are not happy with the changes that occurred recently?

Most countries in Europe don't have this so good luck with ever having it in America. Germany might be about the only one from what I've seen on telly. I've been to games in England, Spain, France and Holland and I'd say all only had sections that make any real noise. Only in Argentina did I find the whole stadium to be rocking for most of the match.

1. No.

2. In some cases, yes. In many cases, no.

The seats in my row and the row behind are consistently occupied by tourists. Keep in mind that the ticket prices for our games are a fraction of the price of many of the other major sports teams. It's an attractive prospect for visitors, $40 for a seat that sells for hundreds during a Yankee game, even if you have only a mild interest in football. Add in the stars on our roster and you've got a recipe for a tourist attraction.
That said, a designated supporters section makes sense. Letting the "ultras" organize in one area gives them the space to start their chants, while leaving the rest of the sections open to more casual atmosphere.

You'll always have one or two asshats that get tased at a game. It could be in the bleachers or anywhere else. Its common place at sporting events. My earliest recollection of such was at Jets game when i was a kid. Dan Marino's Dolphins were destroying the Jets. Sitting in the the nosebleed seats with a bunch of rowdy Jets fan was a lone Dolphin fan sporting the latest Dolphins jacket. Even after the score was into the 40's for Miami, this guy was yelling and screaming. Some drunk guy had enough of this lone man celebrating where he shouldn't be celebrating. The disgruntled Jet fan saw a porter cleaning up some vomit on the steps closest to his seat, pushed the porter back and took the mop stick, ran over to the lone Miami fan, decked him, ripped the jacket from his torso and lit it on fire, waving it and shouting vulgarities. The state police promptly used their batons to bring order back to the area.

Whatever that kid did, it probably wasn't as bad .... but I'd rather get a few volts than have my head split open. Also, the actions of one or two people shouldn't paint a negative picture of the group as a whole. I was at the game with my youngest son this time (13 yrs). At about 20' into the game he says, "Dad, why aren't we sitting over there (pointing to the bleachers). Thats obviously where the cool kids are, and they're having more fun. This section is lame." Guess where I'll probably be next year :)

This. It's not a soccer thing is a general public thing. Went to the Yankees Monday night and watched two wasted 20 somethings get forcefully tossed from the stadium. No tasers although one was so drunk and busy yelling at the cops he fell down the stairs completely on his own and then of course accused the cop of pushing him (which he 100% didn't). When you get that many people together and add alcohol there are always going to be a-holes that can't handle themselves properly. If you're stupid/drunk enough to get tossed and then you keep resisting after they tell you to settle down you deserve to get tased.

I honestly just think that they don't like us. No smoke no nothing and we would still be treated poorly. The people there, Securitas, just don't get our vibe. It's like when older people make fun of the fashion of the younger generations. We won't get any respect until we're in El Estadio Roberto Hobson adjacent to Arthur Ashe, across the street from Citi Field.
