Guys --

I don't know what to do. My U10 son was selected to participate in the Westchester Red Bull Development School. I'm so conflicted as an NYCFC fan. I'll let him do it, but tell him not to enjoy it too much...

He was one of the last few cuts for the NYSC U10 team this year, so hopefully he can make U11.

Thanks for indulging my humble brag -- I don't have too many soccer-knowledgeable friends who would appreciate this.

Family trumps the scarf. You and him both go enjoy (but transfer to the good guys if you can).

Well, I have a bottle of whiskey that I opened that I had no idea would be worth roughly $2500 within a scant year. Fuck me. But it is delicious.

Eta: I drank some of it tonight after seeing what it sells for now. It's really, really good. But I mean, I'd have sold it for half that.

And good luck to your kid. May he become an MLS star who is mostly known for scoring repeated own goals when playing us.

It's great for your son and your family. Have him develop through the Red Bull academy system and eventually make the first team. When he's playing for New Jersey against New York in the second leg of the eastern conference finals one day and the series goes to PKs, he can take the final one and sky it over the crossbar. The Red Bulls will cut him and NYCFC will be glad to sign him. The long con...

That's terrific! Best of luck to your boy, and congrats to him and your family! By the way, I heard Jason K is interviewing for the open coaching position there next week.

Pappy Van Winkle?

JUST DO IT! DONT LET YOUR DREAMS BE DREAM!

But seriously, just accept the offer. Become a great player, get noticed by NYCFC scouts and get transfered.

Pappy Van Winkle?
Yep. A friend and I bought a case of 20 year old a few years ago when it was about $150 per bottle. We got it direct from PA, as their liquor stores are apparently all state run. We just kept a couple of bottles each and sold most of it at our cost to friends who wanted a bottle. Who knew bourbon, and particularly Pappy would be such a damn big deal. It's ridiculous, honestly.

Bulleitt used to be my house rail bourbon. It was $20-25 per bottle, so you didn't mind mixing it, but the taste was both good and interesting enough that it drank fine on the rocks or neat. I could easily restock my bourbon collections for $100 (Bulleit as house, Basil as my personal all day rocks drinker, Blanton's as my "treat yo'self"). That same purchase now would be $150, and that's if all of them are even in stock.

Fucking hipsters. I've responded by switching most of my spirit drinking to rye and scotch. If I'm paying the cost of single malt for bourbon, I'm just going to go ahead and drink a Speyside single malt.

Also, I promised someone a report back on the Bittercube Cherry Bark Vanilla bitters. I will say that it makes a spectacularly good Manhattan. Two thumbs up. I don't drink Old Fashioneds because I'm a grown ass man, but I bet it would shine even more there.

Despite my lobbying for the interesting flavor of the Lacuesta reserve vermouth, the Carpano Antica is the way to go if you are only going to levelup with one vermouth. I'll never go back to Rossi for red vermouth. It has a very chemical taste that is nearly intolerable after stepping up to better offerings. And Carpano Antica is about as good as you can get with vermouth, and a big ass bottle is only $30. Given the price per pour difference being maybe 50 cents difference, you're better off spending your money there even if you step down the whiskey.

To keep this topical, I'll add that it doesn't matter what you mix with Red Bull. It all tastes like big game choking and radiation-poisoned cat piss.

That would be great for my son. He played for JK on the RSL U6 team 4 years ago, so he'll get guaranteed playing time regardless of how he plays.

A case of PVW is tough to come by - to get your fix, a nice replacement for it at a lower price point is Eagle Rare - same distillery. And Bulleit should be everybody's house bottle - bourbon that is, their rye is from a surrogate distillery. One day we'll have a more in-depth conversation about this.... I should send you a pic of whiskey shelf.....

All of this. I've been counting the days until the bourbon bubble bursts and "cool" people get back to their vodka and whatevers.

Bourbon is America. These colors don't burst.

I bet you leave those tags on your mattress, too, don't you?

You know, it pretty clearly states that you can take the tag off if you're the one who buys the mattress.
