Lampard To Nycfc

Lampard is better than not using that dp slot. But i thought NYCFC was gona be part of the new MLS, Lampard is a NYRB move from 3 yrs ago. And I am on the optimistic side of the Lampard argument.
This is exactly my point. We've seen this movie before. It may not be Reservoir Dogs, but it's not a happy ending.

Dude, you have an unhealthy obsession with hating on Lampard. Get over it. He's now part of the team and we need to support it. The freakin' guy is a legend in the UK. We will get at least 2 great years out of him.
You are right about my having an unhealthy obsession though. Just wrong about the subject.

My actual obsession is wanting us to have marquee franchise of MLS. I don't view this signing as one that advances that goal.

If FF comes out and shocks the world by busting his ass, I'll happily admit I was wrong.

We're all here to discuss the team. If we all agreed, every thread would be one post with 100 reps. Then, we wouldn't get quoted in international newspapers and you'd be shy a few hotlist celebs.

He just played in the WC. He's not washed up.

I'm not sure that is solid reasoning really, especially considering England was horrific at the World Cup. Lampard himself wasn't bad but he also wasn't too good. Plus I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Xavi, who most of us seem to prefer to Lampard as a DP signing for NYCFC, also played in the World Cup and he didn't look too good either (to say the least). So, who the hell knows? I just hope Lampard buys into the project and isn't here for one last payday for a 36 yr old footballer.

cash left over? man city has more money than they know what to do with....remember.. DP's don't take up cap space.

Ummm,,, yes DP DO take up cap space. Their whole pay doesn't effect the cap, but each DP "costs" cap space.

In fact, over 23 year old DPs signed for a full season hit the current $3.1 million cap at around $400k. So not accounting for Brovsky or Saunders, NYCFC will use around $800k of the $3.1 million cap tomorrow on 2 players. Thats around 1/4. Now I am hoping that the cap goes up to around $4 million next year, but it still stings.

BTW if NYCFC sign a young guy, like say Julian Green, who is under 23, it would only hit the NYCFC cap at $150k. Thats where NYC should be targeting, at least for the final DP slot.

not sure if I like this Lampard guy after hearing of his 9/11 fiasco. legend or not. sounds like a punk who can't hold his liquor to me

Everyone needs to calm down and remember what we are - an American, MLS, expansion team with 3 players on our roster. We are not that attractive. So lower your expectations a bit. Compare us to other MLS teams, not the idealistic vision in your head.

Second, it's not like Lampard's using a walker. Sure he's older and won't last long here, but what's the worst that can happen? We don't get a 3-player dream DP team? Give it time. We are an expansion team, things will build. If Lampard never plays a game, he still helps raise awareness of the club. If he sucks, he sucks, and we move on next year.

Lastly, drop the 9/11 stuff. So overblown it's making me not want to come to the forums anymore.

Haha, fair enough. But what makes you think that he won't bust his ass and perform well? Sure he's past him prime, but he's moving to a league with less talent, so that should give him a bump in performance. When you're starting a new team, you want to get butts in the seats. Lampard does this two ways, he's a name that people are familiar with, and he's experienced. He's not the future of the team, but he's here to help get it off the ground. Plus, he's only the second player. Still a lot of roster spots to fill with younger, homegrown players.

There's no proof whatsoever that Lampard said anything related to 9/11 to the Americans. Zero. For all we know, he was just a drunken ass in front of some mourning Americans. It's been blown out of proportion.

The key to this deal is the years, i have a bad feeling its a three year deal, if its a 1 year deal i can live with it anything more than that and its just stupid

I wont be supporting this move, it is terrible in my opinion and not a way to build a team, this is setting the whole league back and for $7M , wtf? This is an atrocity, hopefully i eat crow but i doubt it.

I hope its a two year deal, 1 good year and a tragic one. I can live with a 3 yr deal too, with him leaving after 2 if he's horrible and unhappy.

And I agree with the people who have said the $14million+++ should have been spent better... I hope its more like 4mil a year

Haha, an atrocity? Please explain why? He's probably better than 90% of the midfielders in MLS, even at his age.

Its an atrocity because he is going to be getting $7M a year, will be signing a multi year contract at the age of 37 and most of all NYCFC can do better, they could have been a lot smarter here, if they were willing to pay $7M then trust me they could have gotten a much better player with younger legs who would play out the entire contract and be a solid piece to build the team. Henry is the only 37 year i would ever want and he is most likely going to retire because he knows he is getting too old. Lampard may be ok next year but lets talk when he is 40. If this is a one year deal it may be ok but if not this is a huge mistake.

also, I will add that this is bad for the league in general, desperate mls 1.0 move to get a name, we are supposed to be past that

Sorry, but you're over exaggerating. Also, I'm sure the NYCFC brass know what they're doing. They all have much more experience than us.

Of course they know what they are doing, this is a marketing move. You make it sound like no sports executive has ever made a bad signing, we can say that all GM's know what they are doing because they have experience. Meanwhile stupid deals are made everyday, this in my opinion is one of them
