2017 General MLS Transfer Rumors

Honda > Maxi

That being said, if we don't get Khedira (or Torres) in the summer, then it will have been a comparatively disappointing transfer season for us on the DP level.

You said it at the end. Honda can't be bought down with TAM. We can't judge the Maxi signing till we see his salary and what they do with it this Summer.

I can see Maxi actually being our DP and being a $2mm a year DP. From an ownership standpoint you don't want to have a situation where fans view 3 high value, big name, DP's as a right if the club's not making any money. From our perspective it sucks, but I can see the business logic behind it clear as day.

I hear that. But like most here, wouldn't be happy with it. But if we win, I can forgive a lot.

Maxi will hopefully be the Mix we always wanted...
Point taken, but Not the same player. The problem with how most people view Mix is they project him as a 10 simply because he showed more creativity/goal scoring ability than typical for an American mid.

he's always been best in a box to box role and alongside similarly capable and technically skilled players. I don't know what our FO saw him as when he was signed, but it's funny that we've finally dropped him now that we have a midfield where he would make sense. Slot him along 2/3 of Pirlo, Yangel, Ring with Maxi in front and I think folks would love him. Bittersweet for me since I think he's a very strong player and one I enjoy cheering, but I'm happy the team is now better. Oh well. Forward we go.

What if it played out like this?

2017: DP Salary, Bring in Khedira on a GAM/TAM salary, Pirlo retires at the end of the year
2018: DP Salary, Khedira raised to DP status.

I'd like it, but injury risk might make Khedira be leery of the deal since anything that is easily achieveable is counted as part of the cap. Its entirely possible for a player to get screwed by the deal. Also with someone like Khedira were going to need to be fighting Chinese super league money.

Of course the negative externalities of playing in China, like the crippling smog and pollution, make it more likely that he might play here.

Didn't someone post an article here somewhere about China starting to roll back on the crazy spending?

Wayne Rooney is going to be making a million pounds a week in Tianjin next year, that number excludes any marketing/branding income he may accrue.

I'm not seeing a pullback on big money spending here.

I think what your talking about is the CSL changing some of their roster rules for foreigners. To my understanding that change further limited the number of foreign player slots and basically got rid of what we would consider TAM or GAM players, though they were on a different pay scale. Their version of DP spending remains alive, healthy, and spending.

MLS HQ posted their quarterly "several MLS teams are interested in Rooney" article a couple of days ago, iOS push notification and all.

I don't think its very practical to expect Khedira to come over on a deal involving allocation money and not a DP. Both Juventus and Khedira would be giving up money. Only way he comes over is going to be on a DP deal with a significant transfer fee or on a free in July 2019.
