Away - 02/25 SKC

Callens is fucking swift, man.

I saw a lot from Herrera, honestly. He was like our own little mini (younger,I should say)-Kante out there, busting up their ability to counter before it could start. Did you not notice how even when we did give the ball away in bad places, it rarely led to anything threatening? Watch it again. Herrera was putting in some smart work, with a couple of exceptions.

I'll be honest, I may be more impressed with him than Maxi. If he does what I think he will, it will be a sad day for us when his loan ends. If today is an indication, I'd have him on my next US squad if he were American. That kid is physical, smart and technically skilled. He's not roster filler. Not even close. He may be the best DM in the league by the end of the year. He's that fucking talented.
Was big on Herrera from the start. Just from his highlights and limited action I saw him in with Venezuela I knew he'd be a beast for us.
I watched t on a shitty stream on my phone so I didn't get to even make him out for most of the game. Was planning on rewatching the first half as soon as it's up.

Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan its funny you say that about Herrera. As I was typing out that I thought he was invisible, I was thinking how our backline didn't have too many chances to thwart.

A lot of that could be chalked up to Herrera. May go back and watch the game again.

How do you fit Pirlo, Herrera, Ring and Maxi on the field together?

You remove a fullback.

- Surprised Brillant wasn't in the 18 to test out the Mata-Callen-Brillant-Chanot backline
- I think Chanot took too much times to make his pass early on which we also saw last season. He was tackled off the ball a couple of times that lead to some dangerous plays by SKC.
- We have strong possession as always but the chemistry in the buildup was lacking in terms of timing but that will get better with training and over time.
- Comparatively, RJ is the worst player in the starting 11 and of all the positions, RB is the weakest and with the least amount of depth. As has been said, since everyone else is better, he looks worse. Still, I'd give him some time before needed a trade/signing/etc
- We still haven't seen Lewis with this team yet
- Sands deserves a contract just to have him on our books in case he's picked up by a European club as he plays with the US U17s.

We sort of play that if you go:
Mata-callens-brilliant-chanot
On the back and then let mata roam up to a more offensive position while the other 3 slide over.
Am I the only one that thought Mata was kinda Meh this game? With the work Wallace out in I thought Mata played a more defensive role tonight. He was exposed a few times as well and didn't have the 'oh well he was playing up the field' excuse to bail him out. Then again I did watch on a shitty stream so I really need to rewatching the first half ASAP.

Ring was part of our being untested, too. He demonstrated great awareness when he took a card to save our hides from RJ's dumbass, which had wandered into our opponent's box.

There must have been at least a handful of times when RJ had taken off hauling Ass downfield and we're still trying to get the ball out our 18. Once, Maxi literally had to drop into the RB position to help us get the ball out because RJ apparently decided he was going to get in behind. that had to be solely based on his below average soccer iq, because it couldn't have been based on his below average speed or athleticism. It's that kind of dumb shit along with dropping a card worthy foul on a guy in a dead sprint away from goal that makes me lose my fucking mind about players. It was always that shit, with him, Brosky, Jacobsen, Hernandez, Saunders. Just beyond being incompetent skillwise, those are the guys who repeatedly do dumbshit.

Anyway, back to your actual question, in my ideal world, we play Pirlo at home, along with a 3 man backline or something like a 4-3-1-2. I am not criticizing Pirlo or his contributions, as I still think he has a role. It's just that he's a little bit like Mix in the sense that now that we finally have the right type of players for him to play with, he could easily be surplus to requirements. I know they aren't the same players, but I'm just getting at the fact that we have some people who understand spacing and movement finally.

I think Pirlo is a luxury player who can be amazing in the right situations. I believe we have the strength as a team to actually only use him in that way. We'll see if Patty deploys him that way or if he's the first name on the team sheet. That answer will go a long way in determining my prediction for how we finish the year.

Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan i agree that Pirlo is luxury parts right now for how we play.

In a 4-3-1-2? Yea. You have the athletes in Herrera and Ring. Maxi in front. Harrison up front with Villa. They provide their own width as a LW and RW.

If Mata is one of the 3 in back we are really playing 2 in back. I love him (not tonight) but don't think he is well suited as an LCB.

I am expecting to see a lineup with 3 CBs and Mata bombing forward more than we see 2 CBs, Allen and Mata.

PV is going to have the luxury of using lineups that exploit our opponents weaknesses.

I think what impressed me the most in this match was our ability to break the high press. Ring, Herrera, and Maxi showed good composure in our own third, a welcome change from last year's midfield. Even with Pirlo starting our midfield is way more athletic, it's gonna be harder to disrupt our possession now.

All of that is a feature of playing him there and adding someone who can actually defend in place of an RJ Type. One mid stays home, call it Herrera. Then you have Herrera and Chanot, Callens, and probably Mata ready to stop a counter.

It's all about getting your top players on the field.

Previous posts have flirted with it, but I figured it's worth being explicit – PV loves the 3-2-2-3 / WM.

Johnson
Chanot Callens Mata
Pirlo Ring
Camargo Maxi
Harrison Villa Wallace

Overload the center and play an absurdly high line so the lack of defensive width doesn't matter. We have enough pace to handle balls over the top now. Finally. I'm not that worried about Mata as a LCB. It means we're OK without a starter-level RB too. We have a lot of interchangeable pieces that fit into this shape too. Lots of #10s.

Agree that Herrera looked very capable. He just looked like he had so much time on the ball compared to a lot of the other players, and he was in fine company.

Thoughts on Johnson?

As the new poster who popped up to describe Ring had said, it looks like he plays with an edge but under control, which I love. It will be so nice to have a player who complements a skill set with an edge, rather than guys like Mikey and Bravo who compensate for a lack of a skill set with an edge. Small sample size of course, but he just looks like he will be able to confidently and impressively play box to box, CDM and/or the Pirlo babysitter depending on formation/tactic. (And Yangel's development will play a big role as to how his role develops). He could become our MIP this season.
