David Villa Sanchez [Forward]

I hope his pitching is better than his batting, which I would describe as "not quite as bad as Neymar's".

Huzzah!

New York City FC are delighted to announce that reigning MLS MVP David Villa has signed a one-year contract extension.

NYCFC’s first signing, first captain and record goalscorer has agreed to a new deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2018 season.

Villa told NYCFC.com: “Three years ago, we started a very good project to build this amazing club and they chose me to be the first captain which I’m still so proud of.

“When I look back to those first days in 2014, it’s really amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short space of time and to know that there is so much potential for us to continue growing, on and off the field.

“I’m so happy here in this city and at this club, I am fit and I can do things on the pitch - I’m not ready to go to the sidelines.

“That’s why continuing here and signing this contract was a really easy decision for me.”

Question on this, and I understand its not your tweet, so you may not be able to answer this.

But when they say its the highest percentage in MLS, do they mean in that particular timeframe? Or do they mean its the highest percentage for a MLS club's history?

Just since he has been in the league. 2015 on.

Here's a fun thing to think about...

David Villa currently has 76 MLS Caps for NYCFC (Regular Season + Playoffs). If he appears in our 22 remaining home games and say we make a top two seed in the Eastern Conference, the Eastern Conference Semifinal Leg 2 game at Yankee Stadium would be his 100th game, hitting the century mark.

You're leaving out USOC matches.

If he plays them...

Follow up, I've asked Ben Baer, MLS Research Analyst, and typically playoff matches don't count towards caps, so we'll have to wait until 2018.

That's ridiculous. So he can play in a playoff game but it doesn't count as a club appearance? And the team that wins the cup actually didn't statistically play a game? Ben Baer should lay off his recreational vices because his logic ain't.

That's strange. I wonder why. And I wonder if USOC also doesn't count.

I also thing Villa should start USOC. We need to try to keep as much of our starters together. We've seen what happens with our B team. Also, our opening match vs NJ is an international date. So we won't have a few of our normal starters. I'm thinking we don't have Wallace, Mata, Chanot, camargo, and Herrera. So...

Lewis/tmac villa(int) jack
Ring(int) maxi(int) mikey
Sweat Callens(int) brilliant(int) norris
Milkman

That's 5. And a team that can take it to NJ. We're lucky ring is suspended.

Mata probably wouldn't be called up if he's coming off an injury. He may be fit enough for us, but I doubt his NT would take a chance when they can just call in somebody else. But with Sweat, it really wouldn't matter and Mata can rest/train.

I just remembered that Mata got his green card pre-season. So even if he doesn't play for CR because of the injury. He could play for us or come off the bench for limited minutes.

If we get past that first match, I still don't know how we get who we need on the field.

You assume Chanot and Callens have to play, that's 2.

You assume villa has to play. That's 3.

Then who do you leave out from maxi, ring, Yangel?

Yes, I realize this is the wrong thread for this. But the tangent started. The only saving grace is maybe the answer is no Villa in USOC later rounds.

Last year, we were literally against the wall. We had only 13 domestic players, which meant we had to field them all in order to round out a full 18.

This year, we have some flexibility.

(foreign players in italics)
CF: Okoli, Villa
WF: Wallace, Harrison, Shelton, Lewis, Camargo
MF: McNamara, Lopez, Stertzer, Awuah, Pirlo, Moralez, Ring, Herrera
FB: Matarrita, White, Sweat, Allen, Gomez
CB: Chanot, Callens, Brillant
G: Johnson, Johansen, Rawls

Excluding the goalkeepers, we have 14 domestic players for the 16 outfield spots in a typical 18 man roster. Since all the goalies are domestic, that means we can field a team with 16/18 domestic, or go with the max number of foreign players by having 11 of the outfield players be domestic and 5 foreign.

The obvious issue is at CB. I would not be surprised to see White shift inside for the U.S. Open Cup.
