Sunday - at Atlanta
Wednesday - vs New England
Saturday - vs Philadelphia

An easier three game stretch than before in terms of opponents and travel but damn that's a lot of soccer. I think we can get 9 points out of this stretch.

Rotation, rotation. I would go the same 11 from this weekend at Atlanta, more or less the same again vs. New England and then rotate out against Philly.

I think we don't have to rotate at all this time pending injury or fatigue. Why? Because the travel is only to Atlanta for Sunday's game and then fly back to New York either Sunday night (we play at 5 PM so we can make a red eye flight) or Monday. Home game Wednesday. Home game Saturday. So that's two days of rest between each game, not enough, but without the travel it's easier on the players.

And we say what happened when Vieira fell into the fallacy of rotating players. Our next game at Philly next Saturday is the Open Cup vs the Red Bulls which is 11 days after that match.

And the end of the first half, Lalas and Strong were talking about the rotation and said that Vieira will "trust his players" to tell them if they can play or not. So kinda sounded like he would not be rotating as much.

Will say that Villa looked gassed in the 2nd half vs Orlando (Maybe because he was stupidly in long sleeves). Admittedly he had some left in the tank for that last goal, but he was dogging it for portions of the last 35 minutes. If given the choice, would Villa want to start 3 matches in 8 days?

If we have a 2 goal lead in any match, possibly sub Villa off if we're holding the momentum to limit his minutes. And since he won't be playing another match for 11 days, if he plays in the US Open Cup, I'm good with 3 matches in 8 days. MVP.

Villa could have started the RSL match and been subbed out 25min in with a 3-0 lead.

Generally agree, but worth keeping in mind that unlike this week, our 3rd opponent will not be coming off a midweek game. Philly has the Wednesday games off, so they will be rested.

Yes. This was the mistake. If you want to limit his minutes, fine, but then don't put him on at the end when we are chasing a result and they can bunker. Put him on at the beginning when he can help us build a lead.

Nah. If you start a player, you have to expect him to play 90. You can pull him at 60 only if the game situation allows for it. What happens if we are down 0-1 or tied 1-1 in the 60th? You're not taking out Villa.

I'm of the opinion that you play one game at a time. In other words, I would have played the A-team in both Dallas and Utah, then brought the B-team into Orlando. Don't worry about the opponents and schedule, just play your best lineup each game considering all factors.

I meant to post something like this after the RSL match, but I never got around to doing it.

I honestly think a lot of the criticism of PV's lineup choices at RSL are a little unfair with hindsight. Most of us on here were calling for a decent amount of rotation at RSL to save some legs for the game at Orlando (I know there were some who were not calling for this as well). That lineup definitely did not work, and PV called it out himself after the game that it was his mistake.

I personally thought (at the time) the lineup we trotted out was close to what we should do. It obviously did not work and now I do agree that it was a mistake. But I don't think I'll grill PV for that. He tried to do something in order to give some guys a rest with a compacted week, and it backfired.

What I would grill him for with that, is if he did not learn from that mistake and made it again in weeks to come.

As to your first point, I definitely agree. If you want to give Villa a little bit of rest, you start with him on the bench. Ideally, we are able to hold on and have the 1 goal lead late and never have to bring him on at all.

Call me a pessimist but I think there's about a 3% chance we win the next 3 matches. My crystal ball says a draw at Atlanta will be a good result.

I'm sorry but you don't try to rest someone by starting them in the game you want to give them rest.

Villa is the man, but he absolutely can't play 270 minutes this week. Even if he can do it, at his age, this will come back to haunt him later in the season. You need to conserve some minutes throughout the season if you want him at peak down the stretch and into the playoffs. Start him in ATL, if we can get a two goal lead, take him off so he can start Wednesday. If he plays 90 against ATL, that's when strategy comes into play. You either start him against New England, hope we have a lead to give him some rest, or he plays 90 to ensure our best chances of winning. He plays 90 he doesn't start against Philly. Again, it's not in our best interest for him to play 270 minutes, and I would feel more comfortable keeping it at 180. I think Okoli can give NE some trouble, and Philly has been in the best form of the three, so i'd want him to start and be able to go 90 against them.
Basically, I think we put our best foot forward against ATL, then limited rotation against NER/Philly. Chanot/Callens are too important to rest, especially if we rest players elsewhere, we need our rock solid backline. I also would want to reduce minutes for Maxi, but not at the same time as Villa except during a multi-goal lead.
Tough choices, but I sure don't want to see more than 1-2 starters out.

Tata Martino will be suspended for this match as he was ejected during Atlanta's match vs. Houston last weekend.
