Just edited it for clarity. Good catch, this is what happens when I'm typing stuff at 7am.
He signed a 2.5 year deal so if he wants to leave the team has to either sell him or void his contract so he leaves on a free.
He may be our best expensive defender, but he's also our best defender. He's a steal at 400k. When healthy, he's the best CB in MLS.
Keep in mind that NYCFC and Kortrijk worked out a deal before to allow him to leave for a rather large discount when he was under contract. Don't be surprised if NYCFC are willing to work out a deal again in this case. Chanot has been a great player on and off the field, and it's always a good look for a club (to agents and players) when they're willing to work with players and teams to make sure a player is happy.
While I agree, I think, and maybe I am wrong, Chanot's value has increased or at least remained stable since joining NYCFC. He joined according to transfermarkt for 1.35 million. There is no reason we shouldn't try to recoup those costs and give us the maximum amount of GAM.
I disagree. Chanot-Brillant delta is far smaller than Matarrita-Sweat delta.
There is no way that he joined for 1.35 million. His salary plus transfer fee his first year had to be under a million for us to us TAM.
Yeah, I misstated. I should have said that they valued him at $1.35 million. We got him at a discount. What I am saying is that he is likely worth more than $1.35 million now based off him being 1) a top 3 CB when healthy in MLS and 2) him entering his prime.
Transfermarkt now values him less just bc he isn't playing in Europe, which they always notoriously do. Also, why would Chanot want to go back to a small Belgian club like Kortjijk when he could easily be playing for a much bigger club like Gent or Standard Liege who likely have deeper pockets and most seasons will be competing in the Europa League?
Point is, I don't see how it is harmful to player or club by trying to get the maximum GAM out of a deal in a league where stupid structures that are made incredibly valuable such as GAM and TAM exist. It's not like NYCFC would be saying, "oh, we're not selling unless you pay $3M". To get the max GAM out of a transfer doesn't it just have to be $1.3M?
Basically Transfermarkt player valuations are not to be trusted. They may think a player is worth €20m, and the next day someone pays €50m for him. They don't take the crazy European transfer fee boom into consideration, and don't update their evalutions according to players's form and reputation (just look at what they think Ring is worth).

Putting a name on a shirt is, has been and always will be a jinx on the player and the shirt. There's a reason I've never once done it on any shirt I've owned.
I've realized that it's easier to wear a jersey without a name casually as streetwear. That being said, I always find it to be naked without a nameset.
Trying to change my opinion so I no longer buy namesets on NYCFC kits.
You could get namesets of players that you want to leave, with the bonus that your kit will one day be ironic grail.
Was that why there was the one guy who actually had a Grabavoy jersey? (Well, either that or it's his cousin, I guess)

We get the 650k of GAM plus the TAM that was eating up Chanot's salary right? If so I think that we can come out even stronger.
TAM is a yearly budget. So if Chanot isn't here for 2018, we can use the TAM that would have been used for Chanot for other players. I don't think it's like talk minutes on old mobile contracts that would rollover for next month (or next year).
For the GAM we get for transfers...
- A club shall receive two-thirds (2/3) of the corresponding transfer or loan fee revenue (including agent fees and other expenses), from any transaction involving a player that is NOT a Homegrown Player, Generation adidas Player, or player acquired via the MLS SuperDraft.
That being said, MLS roster rules and regulations can be changed at any time...so who knows what the rules are when we might sell him...

I know that one part of the math in calculating the benefits of a transfer out are a credit for the original transfer fee that was paid to get the player. Whether that inlcudes a credit against the budget charge is not clear from reading the published rules.
