That stadium in Columbus is awful. I went to a Crew game there 6 years ago and it was awful then as well. They need to get out of there, whether or not they leave Columbus.

Yeah, I don't quite recall the Seattle/OKC situation either. But I don't understand the last point. Just because the league isn't maxed out or is dying, doesn't mean the league should not take advantage of a potentially better market. If Columbus moving to Austin brought even 80% of the bump that new teams have seen, it would be a success. 2015 saw NYCFC and Orlando have the 2nd and 3rd largest attendances out of 20 teams. This last year, those both took 4th and 5th. This year, Atlanta finished 1st in attendance and awful Minnesota finished 10th out of 22 (in a stadium that is not their home). 2015 Columbus 16th out of 20, in a season which they hosted the MLS Cup Final. This year they are 20th out of 22, in a year which they will at the least be in the Eastern Conference Final.

Sure, I'm assuming that. But on the flip side, you are assuming the team does not perform as well and there is no stadium announcement (which, yes, take it with a grain of salt, but based on news and other releases, sounds like should happen within the next year).

I don't know what you mean by how long CFG is around with monetary power. Like, what do you mean by that?

And yes, I am fully aware that CFG can move if they wanted. But I don't see foreign investors starting a club in NYC (where this is not a team) leaving for another market that isn't currently in use. NO. WAY.

I won't address the scenario where CFG "gets bored" of MLS. In a league where club values are skyrocketing in a ever-growing soccer market (this is realized around the world).

Look, I'm not saying that this isn't a dick move at all. I really do feel for the fans of Columbus. All I'm saying is that this looks to be a move that will benefit the league in the long run.

if the stadium is old and falling apart you renovate it or bring it down and make a new stadium in same area, i mean precourt is still going to spend that money to build one austin isint he? i mean if he did that AND heavily marketed the team it would be doing fine ( having a marketing like half our size at nycfc), just goes back to my belief that he was being cheap and never interested about columbus...austin is not that much bigger than columbus....so i dont know why he sees it as so much better that he feels he should go there.

yea nycfc and orlando did get off to great starts in year 1 but what happen in our case after that ? attendance going down slightly year by year....orlando also was suffering this year with their attendance ( according to kreis at least in an interview where he said he wish people would come to the stadium to support) and thats at a brand new stadium. atlanta is year one and blew everyone out of the water but it also helps that they have an excellent team that it made it easier to sell next year tickets. Austin will not be another atlanta

unless the stadium is going to be belmont ( another fucking disaster if it is true) nothing is getting announced within a year.

bored may not be the right word but we dont know .....maybe somewhere down the line it gets expensive having ownership in all these teams and would just sell their piece to MLS and just stay in manchester and sell off nycfc, melbourne and yokohama etc, they get their money back and more (at a skyrocketing value like you said) and if there is no stadium what happens to us? no CFG then team can very easily move.

this is the stuff i expected when we were "maxed" out of spots like the nba and nfl not now when we are still awarding teams, just looks bad league is doing this but hey like you said its about money and not about respect of the commuinty like MLS always love to claim with their club country and community slogan

Hope the Crew make/host the final. I don't usually like to root for the team that just knocked mine out of the competition but it would be a great and deserved black eye for Garber and all involved with this debacle.

o

Not sure how to read this with the whole problem of not being able to hear inflection in typing. Are you saying that this all for one thing supporters thing is strictly and American thing? Cause if so go look up the AFC Wimbledon /MK Dons Situation...

Or are you saying we're All supposed to be good capitalists here in America so we shouldn't give fuck on those grounds?

Yeah, the lack of effort Precourt has put into Columbus is definitely troublesome. I know there have been reports that he has been "trying" to work with the City of Columbus on getting a new stadium there and that he keeps getting shut down. Though I'm a bit skeptical as to how hard he's actually trying.

All signs point to he bought this team to move to Austin, I see that. I do also see why he would want to. Taking an MLS team into a larger, rapidly growing (and not declining like Columbus) market that currently has 0 professional teams (Columbus also has the struggling Blue Jackets). I'll redirect you to JGarrettLieb previous post on Austin vs Columbus and it appears to me, when you take those two markets, its a no-brainer.

I'm not saying Austin would be another Atlanta and I definitely don't think they would be. But I think there is something to a brand new team (in this case, really just in a new city) that is a massive bump. I want to moreso use Minnesota as the example of this here.

unless the stadium is going to be belmont ( another fucking disaster if it is true) nothing is getting announced within a year.

I'm a bit more optimistic on this (and perhaps naive at this point), but I do think we will get one within a year and it wont be Belmont. There already appears to be considerable news about Willets Point, and now that elections are in the bag, perhaps there will be movement. Definitely agree Belmont would be a disaster, I'd drop my season tickets for sure.

You're going to need to explain this to me more, because this seems to go in a circle. Lets take out Melbourne and Yokohama and etc. because those really don't matter to CFG and NYCFC. But you seem to want to use the skyrocketing value here as an argument that it could be sold, but ignore the reasons why that value exists in saying "somewhere down the line it gets expensive". This really doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah, its a bad look for the league for sure. But does anyone really believe the "club country and community" garbage that MLS throws out there? That's just marketing.

Austin is one of the big upcoming cities in America. It's just a matter of time before the San-Antonio, Austin, and the area between become a huge connected metropolis

I guess many people thought MLS might not be the typical american league where teams move at any whim.

But at the end of the day, its like everything else in the USA, designed to make a bunch of rich folks more money.

Garber & Gulati are really starting to become annoying. The sport really needs soccer guys calling the shots.

Precourt is half assing it, we all know this i just dont like that as a sport i love that we just move teams around just like that. Yes there is the "new team and new city tag" but honestly to me personally born and raised in nyc visiting columbus or austin makes no difference and as a fan it also doesnt mean much no matter how much "upside" team has.

the CFG point is that all we are an investment in a portfolio for them, even with all the CFG mess ups with our team so far the only thing im always iffy on is long term commitment to the team, we dont make money for them then we can be sold....thats it. i honeslty think metrostarts may have been moved had red bull not bought them. both investments in big companies and like all companies have ups and downs, if they get down period they have to cut loses.....all pessimistic thought but still a thought.

yep its all it comes down to let them make more cash....good thing the prospects in this country are leaving to europe at least you know there is a better chance to get to top level there.

i guess but from what I see in mls reddit and usl reddit San Antonio peeps see themselves differently from austin so team may not have much of the san antonio faitful flooding austin

Put the stadium in San Marcos then. No one from Austin is gonna seriously (STH) support a San Antonio club and vice versa. They are far too separated geographically.

Yeah it’s a situation where taking advantage of both markets makes way more sense than tying yourself to one. Call it Texas United or Rovers or something and play games in both cities until you have a permanent home.

I haven’t heard exactly what ties Precourt to Austin outside of seeing dollar signs. But for that or whatever reason it’s clear he bought the Crew just to move them there. We probably wouldn’t even be here if FC Cincinnati hadn’t surprised with their support and the San Antonio expansion bid coming in weak enough to allow him to poach the market.

The whole thing is a major shame. FCC looks great now but will they in 10, 20 years?
As a “former” Whalers fan, league’s that abandon a city salt the earth behind them. I gave up on the NHL 20 years ago and I won’t be going back. Abandoning Columbus isn’t going to transition their fan base to FCC. Screwing San Antonio and locating and identifying the team with Austin isn’t going to create a bunch of Austin fans in San Antonio.

Some people in NYC have longer commutes than the drive from Austin to San Antonio.

Yeah but all of that is not because there is a team in Austin. It's that the process is screwing them out of a MLS bid. I would be pissed too if I was a San Antonio FC fan. My team did everything the right way. It's a short term bridge they are burning. You won't get the hardcore SAFC supporters that are already going to SAFC games.

This probably would never happen because of Precourt screwing SAFC and the Austin USL team, but ideally you could put the MLS team in one city and have a hybrid affiliate in other city, and put the training grounds and maybe a U23 PDL team in suburbs between the two.
