Houston - Postmatch

Absolutely. I was shocked that this didn't happen. PV believes it was a *better* idea to draft TMac into an unfamiliar 6/8 role than to trust someone other than Ring to fill in at CB while Ring goes to do proper Ring things?
We didn’t even need to bring on another CB. With the players on the field, we could have morphed into a 443 immediately by subbing a winger on, either Medina or Isi. Push Ring up, drop Mata and Tinny to true outside backs and tighten up Callens and Ibeagha. That’s it - back to playing a familiar style with everybody in the correct position.

Also, I'd think that if any euro clubs actually analyze PV's managerial performance here, they will quickly realize that they can easily find a higher quality manager. He won't win any domestic or euro cups because he is prone to massive mistakes, and if put up against a higher calibre of managers on a weekly basis.......well.... He is too often outmanaged by MLS level managers so...

This is what I don’t get about the idea that CFG is desperate to keep him. Shouldn’t they know better than anyone that he’s just not very good? Yes his playing career is a draw for players, there’s no off-field personal baggage, and he’s bought into playing his team the CFG way but it can’t be that hard to find managers willing to do that for a multi-million dollar contract.

Anybody know where we can find a replay of the game? It's not on ESPN+ or YouTubeTV. Thought it was still up on Twitter but all I can find is LAG v. SJE. Wouldn't it be cool if we could get all these shiny new soccer streams in one damn place?

It’s odd. It’s not in the highlights. I just wanted to see what happened. It’s odd that for something that seemed it changed the game, there’s no coverage. It’s almost like they are covering it up or something. And why was TMac allowed on the pitch? Are we that shallow in midfield?

That loss felt completely on Vieira. TMac made no sense, Berget added very little even though I no longer completely cringe when I see him, and Tinnerhorn was one of our better players. The obsession with playing out of the back keeps hurting us - the pass was bad and the reception worse - if you don’t have players that can handle pressure you have to hoof it sometimes to be safe.

Really frustrating game - I don’t mind losing but this feels like the same sort of crap our coach does in the playoffs.

Crooks wrote before the game that PV told him that they could play 3 or 4 ATB depending on how Houston was attacking (press or sit low); so why the hell didn’t he move to four after the Herrera injury and move up Ring, or after getting owned for 20+ minutes in the second half, move Ring up to give more bite in the MF?

Pathetic in-game management.

So Chanot makes some mistakes against RBNJ and gets pulled at the half, hasn’t been seen in the 18 since; Ofori was responsible for goals #2 and #3 last night.

Let’s see the degree of coach goggles that PV has for Ofori.

Ofori and Ibeagha were terrible. Villa needs to pass more at the right time. Yangel proved how important he was yesterday.

I can't really tell what the best use of Ofori is going to be but we will have to find out if Yangel is out an extended period of time.

Definitely think he's not a deep-lying midfielder. He needs to be up with Moralez. Moralez-Ofori above Ring has potential. But enough of the Ring-as-CB crap. Move him back to his position.

May seem counter-intuitive at first, especially because of how important Maxi has been offensively this season, but if we're forced to go with Maxi, Ofori, Ring as our new starting three midfielders, then I think Maxi should play the 8 (he will get into tackles) and push Ofori up to the 10 so that his instinctual lack of defensive bite can just be avoided by letting him focus on moving the ball forward. Then again, even in that position Ofori may not have the chops to run the offense. So.......

maybe bring Medina in at 10 (with Maxi at 8), and activate Lewis to play as an extra Wing option (really thinking outside of the box here ;)). Maxi won't make up for Herrera's bite in the midfield, but hes the most mobile terrier-like player we have, and Medina can fill in fine from a creative standpoint of 10.

Seemed like such a low energy and lackluster performance. We had great desire and movement, right up until the point in the game where they commemorate a shooting and one of our players leaves the stadium in a wheelchair....

Sad to say my boy Tommy Mac was completely out of his depth last night. Had a couple of flashes of what he could do, but was breathing out of his arse from the moment he came on. I was yelling at him to do some damn running in the middle, but it was like playing a man down the way he was never available to receive the pass, or join in the attacks..

His walking was endlessly frustrating, but his pointing was out in abundance too (Take the freakin ball and do something with it instead!!). At one point, Villa was pointing for the pass and Tommy wasn't far from him, doing the same thing. Reminded me of this:

I would definitely be intrigued to see a midfield 3 of Ring-Maxi-Medina

I don't think this works. We are noticably soft and off our game when we ddont have two biting midfielders in the game, by which I mean both Ring and Herrera. I think we are in for a rough summer if we don't bring in another 6 or 8. Our midfield three always needs two 6's and a 10 or a 6 and two 8's.

Ofori should be Maxi's backup. He's not like-for-like with Herrera or Ring. And the league is past TMac.

Gonna be quick on this and just bring up two points:
  1. On Houston's first goal, I know we are blaming zonal marking there, and probably for good reason. But the question I have there is, is Sean Johnson supposed to set that up better? Callens was responsible for like 3 guys there. Somebody else has to be on the back post due to the sheer number of attackers there, and I feel like SJ needs to place someone there. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
  2. Once Herrera went out, I think PV needed to then bring on Medina or Shradi and switch back to a 4-3-3. I know there is some discussion about the 3-5-2 vs the 4-3-3, and I tend to agree that I like seeing more of the 3-5-2, but against Houston, the 4-3-3 probably would have been a better matchup choice. However, throw that out the window once Herrera is hurt, because at that point, sticking with the 3-5-2 does not allow us to maximize our talent on the field. Moving back to the 4-3-3, bringing on Medina or Shradi, and having Ofori at the 8 would maximize that.
