2018 Yellow Card Accumulation (Updated Oct 17)

Updated post-Orlando.

As we are all aware, Ring is out tonight. Seattle won't be missing anyone.

Vancouver will be missing a defender in our game next weekend.

Waston out? That’s huge. Just have Ring mark the 17 Bayern player and we’ll be good next week.

I know a lot of people are going nuts over what Davies did yesterday, but Yordy Reyna showed some class too. Him and Kei could still give us lots of trouble.

This got me thinking about Alex Ring and his Yellow Cards.

In 2017, he got 10 Yellow Cards in 29 appearances. He was suspended twice and was on the cusp of a 3rd suspension. He got a card pretty much every third game, with a few shorter and longer streaks. He never made it more than 4 appearances without a Yellow Card (and hence never got a reduction).

At the start of this season, he was, if anything, worse - with 2 cards in the first 3 games and 4 in the first 6 in which he appeared. He was in line to be suspended before we even got out of April. Since then, he has only had 2 in the following 13 games. This includes a streak of 8 games without a Yellow Card, which got him a reduction and put him on the cusp of another one. He's got 11 games left to avoid getting 3 more cards and another suspension. I am optimistic he will get there.

And I think we can confidently say that it's really only 1 true yellow in the following 13 games, as it appears he intentionally (not as in the same sense of "professionally") tried to get the yellow against Orlando in order to serve the suspension in what was looking to be a game which he would be rested for anyways.

Updated after New England. Ring misses next game (which we all knew). TMac the only other guy on the bubble. Villa and Callens are at 3 cards.

Updated after DC United and going into next 3 game stretch.

Callens is now on 4 Yellows and would be suspended with a Yellow in any of the remaining games except for the last (regular season Yellow Cards do not carry into the post season).

Edited to add a reminder that Herrera is also on 4 Yellow Cards and would be suspended with another if he comes back.

And if Yangel comes back he’s also on 4, but I wouldn’t care if he chopped someone down to get his feet wet.
