They’re definitely going to try and get some additional uses out of the stadium than just the mls season. I can see them trying to land concerts, a college football bowl game, etc.
Having been to a few MLS stadiums, and also a ton of premier league/European stadiums, I hope we invest more money and don’t just settle for the basic MLS stadium layout that we see all over. There’s a real opportunity to be the class of MLS.
I went to the movies, just came out, and got like 10 alerts about this. It’s great news across the board (even the commute is slightly worse for me). Now the question: are we still playing in Yankee Stadium until 2027? Or are we going to do a quick divorce and play primarily at Citi?
They may just stagger the times either way. Most Met Saturday home games are 7 pm starts, so NYCFC could still do 4 pm starts those days with no real issue. Apple has said in their tv deal that timing exceptions will be made for stadium availability issues
I imagine they’re going to try and negotiate cable deals for the playoffs as well, but yes I hope the Apple deal means we can play playoff games on Saturdays
I know the reason why this is the case (because ESPN and FOX are showing college football all day) but man these MLS semifinal games would do much better on a Saturday than up against an NFL Sunday.
MLS (and really, soccer leagues as a whole) is the only league in North America that allots away supporter tickets for matches, and it’s awesome. MLS certainly has a lot of room for growth, but that sort of experience going to away matches (especially the final of your league) is unparalleled...
Makes complete sense. I’ve been traveling a ton this month, but figure if they give us $10 tickets again, I’d HAVE to go.
I’m actually in Seattle this weekend (go Giants) so I won’t be able to attend the Philly match, but I probably wouldn’t have been able to go even if I was at home… the 8 pm...
Every rumor here points to Apple trying to make the MLS like the EPL, which does the majority of its games on Saturday windows (and occasional Wednesdays), with Saturday windows being in the afternoon and the evenings.
It would make no sense for Apple to only do night games, especially in the...
Further to this point, they specifically say they want to stagger times to create a Red Zone like channel/show. If that’s the case, they’ll want windows from East coast afternoon to evening. I think they’ll do afternoon games just as much as evening ones.
Given that our broadcasts are a pain in the ass to find when they conflict with Yankee games, having a specific place where they will always be broadcast is fantastic news for us. This is pretty great, esp since STHs get this package for free.
Whenever I’m at matches, I see far more folks without scarves than with. I know there’s a good chunk of supporters that still wear scarves, but it feels like a waste compared to the number of fans that wear Hats or T-shirts.
Of course the best option would be to produce both and let us choose…
