2016 Preseason Thread

Either that or: Don Garber has looked at the rules that were made *cough*cough* last year, found a new clause, and will now include 2-3 more international spots per team, and it definitely has nothing to do with the amount of spots the LA Galaxy need. We promise!

this is the most plausible out of all scenarios :D

They should be adding international spots to keep up with expansion so we are due for another one. That being said you would think the league would be smart enough to have added it at the beginning of free agency, rather than waiting until now when it will clearly look as though they are playing favorites with LAG once again.

well in the short time of following the league....they have shown that they may not be the smartest when it comes to timing of their decisions.

but to your point on expansion there was a rumor that expansion sides ( atlanta, minnesota) will get more international spots instead of a expansion draft, which i hope its true.

Don Garber's Subconscious: MLS will be a top league in the next decade. We are growing in terms of fans from all over the world. Fans want to see players from their countries play. We need more international spots to accommodate those players. Thanks Bruce Arena for the suggestion.

Yes. The player would have to miss at least 6 games, but given that we haven't seen Harrison or Lampard training recently it wouldn't be a huge loss. Harrison obviously the more likely candidate.
I suspect this is our answer then. I can't see JH playing within the first two months of the season at this point, so that appears to be the solution. Separately, any further intel on CR's comment about adding a few additional new players? That may or may not spark some additional needs to gain spots and/or move players.

Even if this is the solution it's only temporary. We'd still be one over the limit when he returns unless someone picks up a greencard somewhere.

UPDATE: Jack Harrison is progressing well. Should be out there soon.

That's all I got.

has anyone in MLS mentioned anything? i mean if the deadline was yesterday and there are still teams over the limit....what gives? is there a penalty if you go past the deadline?

I made a snarky remark yesterday about MLS holding things up for L.A., but now I wonder if that's exactly what the league is doing for RSL & Seattle? Since both are still involved in the CCL, I wonder if MLS is delaying any roster announcements to give each any sort of edge (no matter how slim)?

It's also possible they've changed the rules to add another international spot or two. If the league did something like that the teams would know but they may not want to make an announcement yet.

Just a theory but it kind of fits what we're seeing.
