2017 Roster Discussion

The talent to steal right now is in Argentina. Venezuela is certainly interesting, and we have seen a lot of movement on players there around the world - but Argentina is ripe for picking.

I think that depends on how you look at it. Yes, Argentinian clubs are in turmoil as usual and won't be able to keep promising talent. Yes, their youth development is good and they produce lots of talent. On the other hand, Argentinian players are scouted by every scout who roams the earth, and tend to command high values that, with the benefit on hindsight, don't seem necessarily justified. People buy high not be left behind. Meanwhile, less developed or less trusted markets, such as Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Paraguay etc. may also produce talent that hasn't been promoted and discovered as much. And judging by the latest U-17, U-20 results, the talent gap may be closing a bit.

I'm not talking about competing for the next Dybala here. I'm talking about competing for the guys who who never make it to Europe but can make a big impact here. The next Lodeiro.

Regarding Herrera's time away from the squad. I checked the FIFA U20 World Cup page (linked below). Venezuela play the opening match against Germany, and go on to group games against Mexico and Vanuatu. It's a tough group, but 4 of the 6 third place teams advance, and with the Oceana representative in the group it is safe to assume Herrera's team will at least finish top three.

Venezuela finish the group stage on Friday, May 26. If they are eliminated at that stage, Herrera would miss our games against Dallas, RSL, Orlando and almost certainly at Atlanta, on Sunday, May 28.

If they advance, their first round game would be between May 29 and June 1, meaning Herrera would miss our 5/31 game against New England.

If they progress to the quarterfinals, that means a game on June 4 or 5, and Herrera would miss our 6/3 game hosting Philly.

Fortunately, that's as bad as it can get, as we then have 2 weeks off for an international break. The championship game is on 6/11, and our first game back is against the Sounders on 6/17.

What if he's so good at the U20 World Cup that Man City end the loan early? Ugh.

Why would they end it early? He's not eligible for a work permit.

The only thing that could happen is they'd want to sell him, and it'd have to be for a serious return on investment to do it now rather than waiting - its worth more to CFG to stock NYCFC for a run at winning MLS than it is to flip a prospect unless it's for very serious coin.

Could he get his work permit based on minutes at the U20 WC?

Lodeiro is Uruguayan. And he played in Europe.

And Argentina has been discussed at length.

No one can complain about other people saying Americans know shit all about footy when a board of supposed diehards posts some of the shit I read on here.

People hypothesizing about Poku before and Herrera now going to MCFC. anything of that sort. Get a damn clue, guys. That shit ain't happening. You don't go from any club in MLS directly to MCFC or any other club in the top 6-7 in a top 4 league. rules or not.

But yeah, there are rules.

I tend to root for the underdog, but in this case I guess we'll all root against Venezuela. Also, good soccer results tend to give dictators a lifeline, so rooting against Maduro too.

You mean you didn't believe the Poku to Barca speculation on here?

Vieira told reporters the team was looking to sign a third DP before the season started, guess they'll have to look elsewhere.
Follow up:

Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe is allegedly on the verge of being sold to Fenerbache for 7 million euros so I think it's safe to say he's not coming to MLS anytime soon.
