2017 Roster Discussion

This was posted in another thread but I'm cross replying because I want to talk about the ESPN Top 30 list and the team by team composition. Let's get the disclaimer out of the way. I'm not endorsing the list as definitive and certainly not saying it's flawless. But it is a at least defensible list for the most part. I'd move some people around but generally the list s what you would expect. I'd say Kaka is probably the biggest head scratcher who does not belong, and the lack of defenders keeps it from being a true best player list. But with that limitation it's a reasonably good.

Just counting players on the list, Chicago leads with 4, followed by Dallas, Portland, Seattle, and Toronto with 3. Four teams have 2, and six teams have one player on the list. NYCFC has only one player on the list, basically tied for 16th place. Based on PPG, NYC is ahead of all but 3 of the teams with more Top 30 players.

If you assign every player on the list a point value with #30 worth 1 point and #1 worth 30 points, at 30 points NYC comes in seventh, behind CHI, TOR, POR, ATL, SEA, DAL and ORL. Yet NYC is ahead of 4 of those teams on PPG.

We have a solid roster, but outside of Villa we lack MLS-recognized difference makers. It's kind of amazing to have performed this well with basically one MLS star. The rest of our best players either do most of their work on defense/possession (Chanot/Ring) , are undervalued, or have hardly played (eg Herrera). It's not how any of the other best teams in the league are constructed.

Vieira's still learning, Reyna's still learning, and CFG seems a bit distant most of the time.

Our manager is installing a good system with no backup plan. Our GM brings in average talent. Our owners have dicked around with our DP spots (Lampard to MCFC, Pirlo primarily for marketing), then cut budget ($2 million latest DP signing) and have provided minimal support otherwise (three loanees in three years).

Honestly, if it wasn't for David Villa, our house would fall apart. I don't know what the right move is, but I sure hope we do something different before Villa retires in 1.5-2.5 years.

This guy's got jokes.
“I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’m someone who wants to play week in and week out,” Allen told SBI. “It hasn’t worked out for me this year like it did last year but I’ll continue to push hard every day. I’m someone who wants to be an MLS All-Star and I think I’m good enough to do that in this league.

Camargo officially on the season-ending injury list. Oddly enough Shannon Gomez isn't listed as "on loan"

I don't recall him ever being designed on loan on that list. The MLSsoccer.com people are so bad with updating the roster and disciplinary reports week to week. There are games tomorrow and the disciplinary report hasn't been updated yet. This effect fans who want to play fantasy or just argue over lineups.

The report hasn't been updated because it isn't out yet! I'm waiting for the damn thing updating my email for that, and any possible transfer news. So far it's zero on both ends.

If Marky Delgado isn't suspended, I will march down to the MLS offices and demand a reason why.

Anyway, to follow up on Gomez, he's not listed as going on loan or coming back either on the transactions page. https://www.mlssoccer.com/transactions/2017
