2017 Season Review

2017 isn't over yet as far as a stadium announcement is concerned! There's still hope. Here's to hoping we have a loftier goal for 2018!

Election is tomorrow. But more likely something to happen after everyone is sworn in in January.

...And all thread turn into the stadium thread.

MVP: We all know this one

Most Improved: The composition in Ethan White's photographs has come on leaps and bounds. But yeah, he was a total bombscare last season, but rarely looked out of his depth this year. Even showed some nice link-up play with Jack at times.

Favorite New Signing: Alex Ring edges out Callens

Biggest Surprise: How quickly we jettisoned Pirlo from the starting XI. Not that it was the wrong decision (it wasn't), but I fully expected Vieira to stubbornly keep him in all year.

Biggest Disappointment: Sean Okoli rarely looked like the natural-born goalscorer that was advertised. I really want it to work, but I don't really see how or where he fits into this system.

Player You Hope Comes Back Next Year: David Villa. I'm inexplicably nervous he'll become the first player that we sell against the fan's wishes. And justifiably nervous that I'll wake up to some headline about preseason ligament damage or something.

Player You Hope Not To See in an NYCFC Jersey Next Year: Tommy Mac was perfect trade bait at the start of the season. That ship has sailed. Still think we can do a lot better for the money.

Favorite Match: The 3-2 win over the Red Bulls was a fantastic game all round, with the right result of course

Top 3 goals: Villa vs Philly; Villa's second vs Red Bulls; Lewis vs NE

High point of the season: The 2-0 win at Red Bull Arena was a perfect away day, and felt like a statement of intent for the rest of the season. Closely followed by Villa's goal against Philly, which felt like the closest we've come to breaking through to the American sports mainstream.

Low Point of the season: The Citi Field announcement was the first time I questioned the long-term viability of this team. Our situation is more fragile than we sometimes realize.

One Word or Phrase to Describe the 2017 Season: Encouraging

Goal for 2018: To keep the location of the bizarrely deserted beer bar I use at half time a secret. That, and some kind of silverware. The Villa clock is ticking.

Goal for 2018 (and really expectations, not goal) should be a trophy. I know we can say MLS Cup or bust, but given razor thin margins and potential injuries, nothing is guaranteed. Heck, the “greatest team of all time” generally looked like hot poop last night and was a goal away from being eliminated.

So Open Cup, MLS Cup, or Shield should be the expectations for 2018 if they keep the key players and address several areas.

I’d even take CCL qualification sans trophy.
