2017 Season Tactics Thread

It's going to be hard for any team to mark us once Hererra gets back. Having one extra tall/physical body can put stress on the assignments.

Chanot, Callens, Sweat, Hererra, White are all 6'0" or taller and Wallace plays bigger than his 5'11". That's a formidable group provided Maxi/Harrison can get the crosses in.
Only nit is we're unlikely to see Sweat and White at the same time with Mata back.

If Mata is a sub our depth got a lot better.
As a sub winger, he's a guy we could go to and immediately insert energy and change of pace. I wouldn't be surprised if his long term outlook is as a winger and not a defender (just like Wallace).

Mata can back up LB and LW, in addition to starting at LB if Fuchs becomes the backup CDM.

I think everyone can finally appreciate the importance of depth after the last month.

I hate to admit, but I missed the second half against Philly. I hear Lewis played well. Was he on the right or the left?

Right, looked like a reasonable imitation of Jack. Stepovers with quick movement and got off a few decent crosses.

In this case, I suppose it is progression to the mean.

Either way, it's good to see (and a reminder about how random soccer can actually be).

I don't know if this is a dick comment or an informative one, but it's always "regression" to the mean because it's referring to a reduction in the distance to the mean, which is always a positive number.

This Club is not bringing in Fuchs for he or Matarrita to sit on the bench.
You mean like Pirlo sitting on the bench.... er... stands....?

I'm just messing with you, but I do think that if the team is fully healthy, and neither Mata nor Fuchs can play RB, then Mata goes to the bench as a change of pace winger or 5th defender/extra midfielder. Fuchs is most likely the starting LB and backup DMid. And Mata isn't necessarily going to beat Wallace out for LW for the starting nod, but he would be a killer against tired legs.

No, just trying to be a little cute and make fun of our underperformance.

If we had Fuchs since the beginning of the year, he would have sucked up the game time that Ben Sweat (625 minutes) and Mikey Lopez (265 minutes) have received so far.

I totally get the cap issue, but the idea that "'bench' players never play" is complete nonsense.

And Mata is quality, but he isn't *must play every minute of every game* quality.

Let me throw this thought out at your. We played some sort of 3 in the back formation to finish the game. I think PV wants to play total football but doesn't think he has the defenders for it for 90 minutes. PVs' 3 in the back had Chanot at RCB and Sweat at LCB with Callens in the middle - very similar to how Conte did it at Chelsea.

I have absolutely no clue what formation the other 7 outfield players were in, but at one point Harrison was playing as a RWB and then he was an 8. Anywho, you could play that same "total football" formation with Fuchs as your LCB. You can almost get all of your gamebreakers on the field at the same time. This probably happens at the expense of Herrera, though. Ring would lie deep as he did on Saturday. Maxi could be paired with another attack minded player - let's say Harrison - sort of how Pep has Silva and De Bruyne underneath Aguero. Then you could get two of Matarrita/Lewis/Wallace on the pitch at the same time.

That's the best I got. But for some reason we play better when we just throw numbers forward. I'm sure we would get crushed on the counter.

I think your understanding of our formation there is accurate, but I don't think its necessarily what PV wants to play for a full 90, but moreso what he wanted to play when chasing goals. After going up by 1, and even though we were still bossing possession, I was a bit worried how we would defend that we could get caught on a counter. Especially considering Sweat was now part of a 3-man backline, and he's been used to bombing up the field.

I don't think Hererra comes off for anybody if we're playing total football.

Fuchs can play LB, LCB, CB, and CDM. Matarrita can play LB, LM, LW. Wallace can probably play all those positions too. And Lewis and Camargo can probably play both sides. Harrison can play RW and probably in the center. There's room for all of these guys on this team. Maxi can play centrally or on the wing. Herrera and Ring are going to be rocks in the middle once happily together again.

Another RB needed.

Bruce put Ucubed on the Gold Cup 40 man to up his value as a favor to Reyna. Finally, I have an explanation that I'm okay accepting for that ridiculousness.
That or to conveniently take him away from the team so PV doesn't have to go to him now that Lewis is looking fit.

This requires him being on the actual roster, which I think is a step too far.

I am so tired of losing one important game after another while emphasizing a primary philosophy that prioritizes aesthetics. I don't want to hear one more quote from Vieira, Soriano, Reyna, or anyone connected to this team that talks about beautiful football or beautiful soccer until we win at least one damn elimination match. You want to prove you can win beautiful, then win just even one damn elimination game first. I'm not even demanding a championship. Hell, score a damn goal. Until then shut up about beautiful, or talk like this guy:

"Everyone said [our opponent] played beautiful football and that the beauty of the game matters and bla, bla, bla. I told my players that, for me, beautiful is not giving our opponents what they want. I even joked with [one], 'With your feet, we're for sure not playing from the back."
"That's where we won the game. During the initial stage of build-up we never played from our center-backs to our midfielders, because they are great at recovering possession by pressing high. ... If the ball isn't there, what are they going to press?"
