2016 Expansion Draft Rules

• MLS Clubs may protect 11 players between their Senior, Supplemental and Reserve Roster. If the Player’s contract expires at the end of 2016, he will still be considered part of the Club’s Senior Roster.
• Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2016 MLS Season and Homegrown players on a Club’s Supplemental/Reserve Roster at the end of the 2016 MLS Season are automatically protected (Clubs do not have to use a protected slot on them). **This means Harrison will need to be protected, but Sands & Lewis do not need to be protected. **
• Designated Players are NOT automatically protected (i.e., Clubs must choose whether to protect such players and if such player is not protected, he will be available for selection in the Expansion Draft).
• Maximum Player Loss: Once one (1) player has been claimed from a Club’s non-protected roster, that Club is eliminated from the Expansion Draft and may not lose any further players.
• Clubs may make available a number of international players equal to their total number of international players minus 3, provided that if a Club has 3 or less international players it may not make more than one 1 player available. **This means we have to protect at least three international players.**
  
• If a player retires, he will not be a part of the Expansion Draft, but his Club will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to play.

I don't think there really is any debate this year about the top 9 players on the protection list. Yangel situation could be very interesting. We need to make 3 international players eligible so it probably going to be Pirlo and Camargo. Even if Yangel comes back next year, CFG could flat out tell the expansion teams that he is going to go to Europe if selected in the draft. We also need Pirlo to not retire until the end of the expansion draft, or we might have to make both Brillant and Herrera avaliable.

For the last spot throw a dart. Khiry Shelton probably has the most trade value out of those 5 guys so I say we protect him.

Yangel is on loan, so wouldn't he "return" to MCFC and then they'd loan him back to us? It's not like we'd lose him because we'd hold his discovery rights.

If I was Reyna, that's exactly how I'd tell MLS to view it, because otherwise, MLS will lose out on Herrera since MCFC will never loan to any any other team.

We will definitely lose either Sweat or White. I'd hate to lose either after their contributions this year, but I think Sweat has the bigger upside with his attacking ability.

The rules quoted above say nothing of no-trade contracts. In the past they have been required to be protected and logically that is the only way that makes sense. Otherwise teams with no-trade players get extra protection. While DPs need not be protected, many (most) DP contracts are no-trade. We won't sign a new DP until after the expansion draft happens.
Seems odd they do not require loanees to be protected for the same reasons, but maybe they want to encourage good loans.

I guess this means (if the rules don't change) that Pirlo counts. But he will be off-contract, and not coming back. It's not even an issue that he is left unprotected, as realistically it is a moot question even if he technically will be on the list.

If we can raid FC Cincy for their young wing, striker, and GK, I'll be ok with losing a single player to LA. Will probably be Sweat or White, which would be a shame - I just wish there was some way we could entice LA to take TMac. I'd throw in an extra $50-100k if they selected him.

I'd forgotten that the rules made you not protect three international players, in that case I can see us probably loosing Brillant. We've seen that Brilliant is a quality center back in MLS over the past few games, and if there is one constant in expansion teams is that they are constantly hurting for defense, especially center backs. So we're probably going to loose Brillant, unless CFG can make a side deal with MLS in the vein of what you posited earlier.

If CFG can make that deal we probably wind up loosing Sweat over White. Wingbacks are a scarce commodity and Sweat probably has a higher ceiling than White anyway, and white is a real RB not a wingback.

There's no way a player on loan could be eligible to be selected in the expansion draft. No team would reliquish control of where their loaned player played.

They are eligible. Players techincally are loaned to MLS not to a team. Whether or not an expansion team would want to draft a loanee is a different story.

That's surprising. I would assume that the terms of the loan allow a recall, so I'm assuming they do not have to protect him as no team would select him.

In this case, its even more murky because he is only here on a 1 season loan. CFG wouldn't even have to recall Yangel. They could simply not loan him to MLS next year.

I like to think that the lack of a multi year loan deal was made with the expectation of the draft this year, and the desire not to handicap the overall profitability of the player. For every player that is sold out of MLS the league is going to take a cut, for some players this will be acceptable. From CFG's perspective the loss of some minor revenue to ensure maximum competitiveness in MLS is an acceptable cost of doing business. Extending this cost of business to every player NYCFC touches is not so acceptable.

Not trying to be difficult, but how could a player with no MLS status be drafted?

The rule you cite applies to free agents or players out of contract, neither of which would apply to Yangel.
