2018 Expansion Draft Thread - LAFC Selections

Worth clarifying the official rules now that we know them.
  • Each team may protect 11 players.
  • Homegrown players and Generation Adidas players who have not graduated from that program are automatically protected and do not count against the 11.
  • Clubs must protect at least 3 of their international players.
The rules are basically the same as what EganSoccerWords derek_villa posted at the top of the thread, except that I think he was mistaken in how the international players are treated. The rules say the most international players that a team can make available equals that team's total number of international players minus three. That's a more confusing way of saying each team needs to protect at least 3 international players.
Reading that sentence again made my brain hurt.

Here is my Protection List
  1. David Villa
  2. Maxi Moralez
  3. Jack Harrison (assumes he is graduated from GA)
  4. Alexander Ring
  5. Sean Johnson
  6. Alexander Callens
  7. Maxime Chanot
  8. Ronald Matarrita
  9. Ben Sweat
  10. Andraz Struna
  11. Yangel Herrera (if he's coming back, otherwise, Ethan White)
Automatically protected: Lewis and Sands

This leaves the following players exposed.
  1. Allen
  2. Awuah
  3. Brillant
  4. Camargo
  5. Gomez
  6. Johansen
  7. Lopez
  8. Mena
  9. Okoli
  10. Rawls
  11. Shelton
  12. Stertzer
  13. Wallace
  14. White (or Herrera)
Would only swap Wallace for Maxi. I love Maxi, I just think we have a better chance of making more out of a DP slot / 2M than we do of finding better value than Rodney at 220K. That depends a lot on what we are planning to add in 2018 though.

Struna makes the most sense to leave unprotected IMHO. He likely goes unpicked and he's on an option year. Since FIFA, doesn't recognize options, he can walk if picked. I don't know if he is the solution at RB or worth 150k either.

I'm pretty impressed so far, on limited playing time to build fluency. I just don't know who else we could get. Not very attuned to those markets. Maybe we have some FM18 experts out there who can chime in. But I expect they tend to spend most of their time on FM.

You absolutely have to leave Maxi and Struna unprotected.

I'm not entirely convinced he's that much better than RJ Allen in the limited amount we've seen him. He's an international player and he's replacement level.

Maxi won't be picked by LAFC because they have plans for 3 DPs. It's a waste to protect him.

Do we know whether Maxi has a no-trade clause. I expect he does but don't think we know. If he does, he is automatically protected and counts as one of the 11.

And if not, then K Kjbert is correct. The proper strategy is to leave him unprotected, since we know LAFC won’t use a DP on him. I mean who could be so foolish to sign him for $2mm in a capped league?

There are other lockerroom factors you have to think about as well. Regardless of what you feel about Maxi's contract situation, he is going to be on the team next year and we need him to perform. Not protecting him so you can protect a bench player who also will not get picked, doesn't seem like a great move for me.

If he's not professional enough to take his overpaid contract and suck it up, they should get rid of him anyway
