2018 Expansion Draft Thread - LAFC Selections

At his salary, I don't think we miss Brillant. Let him go to LA if they want him.

That said, I think we are overparanoid. LAFC will take 5 players from 22 teams. I think there's around a 10% chance one of our guys is selected. When the dust settled, Atlanta only carried 3 expansion draft players into the season, and Minnesota only carried 1.

Really interesting how many of those players were traded.

Are GA’s protected? If not, then Lewis is gonna be an awfully expensive loss due to his Tam/Gam. Switch him with either Wallace or Maxi. If Maxi is selected, we get two new DP’s with more flexibility.

Not Eligible
  • Jonathan Lewis (Generation Adidas)
  • James Sands (Homegrown)

Yangel Herrera's loan will end so I don't think we need to protect him. We can always get him back on loan (if we can get him back on loan for another season) after the expansion draft happens.

Yes. I think I covered all of the eligibility stuff in the first post and added Struna.

Assuming we don't need to protect Herrera, this would be my list as well.

The only other thing I could see depends on if the Front Office already has its sights set on its next DP as a LW, and is quite confident in the ability to bring them in, and if they think Struna is a potential solution at RB next year (either starter or rotation), then maybe unprotecting Wallace. But I think I'd still protect him.

Same scenario as above, and if they think they have identified another quality CB to take Brillant's slot that can free up some cap space. I love having Brillant as our 3rd CB, but with Ferraresi coming on and Brillant's salary, IF we can get another quality CB for cheaper, then maybe unprotect Brillant and protect Struna.

I don't see anyone else worth protecting.

I think the protection list will generate tremendous insight on the clubs priorities this offseason. Struna will be a 150k player next year and we still have White and Gomez. IDK if Struna is the solution at RB.

It's good that we have enough depth that this is now a tougher call.

Remember that all else equal, it is better to protect cheap players than expensive ones. It's not just the Best XI. If a player can be replaced by going out into the market and using his salary on someone else, that is someone to leave unprotected.

Moved this to the team news thread as this will actually be team news if someone is picked.

Worth clarifying the official rules now that we know them.
  • Each team may protect 11 players.
  • Homegrown players and Generation Adidas players who have not graduated from that program are automatically protected and do not count against the 11.
  • Clubs must protect at least 3 of their international players.
The rules are basically the same as what EganSoccerWords derek_villa posted at the top of the thread, except that I think he was mistaken in how the international players are treated. The rules say the most international players that a team can make available equals that team's total number of international players minus three. That's a more confusing way of saying each team needs to protect at least 3 international players.

When do they make an announcement on Harrison graduating?

Here is my Protection List
  1. David Villa
  2. Maxi Moralez
  3. Jack Harrison (assumes he is graduated from GA)
  4. Alexander Ring
  5. Sean Johnson
  6. Alexander Callens
  7. Maxime Chanot
  8. Ronald Matarrita
  9. Ben Sweat
  10. Andraz Struna
  11. Yangel Herrera (if he's coming back, otherwise, Ethan White)
Automatically protected: Lewis and Sands

This leaves the following players exposed.
  1. Allen
  2. Awuah
  3. Brillant
  4. Camargo
  5. Gomez
  6. Johansen
  7. Lopez
  8. McNamara
  9. Mena
  10. Okoli
  11. Rawls
  12. Shelton
  13. Stertzer
  14. Wallace
  15. White (or Herrera)
