2018 General MLS Transfer Rumors

One reason Toronto might want to sell Giovinco is that he has the biggest contract in MLS ($7mm yearly I think), it ends next year, and he wants an extension now.

They are understandably less than eager to extend that for someone who will be 33 in the first year of the new deal and has a history of repeated injuries. He probably wants to lock the money in now for the same reason. So they're making him wait, which makes him unhappy, and more than likely they just lose him if they don't make a deal for him. I think ideally they keep him through 2018 and deal him between seasons, but if an opportunity presents itself, I can see them acting on it.

Claudio Marchisio is currently in China. Looks like he's choosing CSL over MLS.

Hmmm. I don't know anything about the Crew but do they have another keeper that can step in at something near that level? Seems to me that might be just one more nail in the coffin of messing with Columbus as they move the team.

They had this guy Stuver last season. Unloaded him somewhere for allocation money.

He’d be a steal for a championship side - but he really should be going to an EPL club since he’d be easily in the middle of the pack of current keepers there.

I was thinking the same. There's a huge talent drop in the EPL after a few teams. He could easily be starting there. That might be saying more about that league than his level...but it is what it is no less.

His level is quite high, not yet at the level of Keller, Friedel, Howard when they were tops in the EPL, and the best EPL teams have keepers at that level, but Steffen is easily second tier-ready for the EPL - a team from about #6-14.

I understand Karius might be looking for a new gig soon.
I don’t know that they think he’s sellable in his current mental condition. Perhaps a loan to a mid-table French team or something might work.

But I think Klopp is going to try to use him in domestic cups since Migs has basically said he wants to leave and it’s rumored they are selling Ward to Leicester for £14M or so (he was supposed to start the friendly today, but has been kept out of the squad).
