2018 General MLS Transfer Rumors

That is a really good point. And gets me thinking more from a USMNT standpoint....can Nagbe play the 6? Get Bradley off the field and replace him with Nagbe. I think he has the tools to be able to play there.
I can kinda see that. However I'm not sure he has the tenacity or bottle for it. Imagine him against Ring or Herrera. Nagbe has always had the tools.

I think Atlanta is done making moves. They have 28 on their roster now.

They are stacked with attacking talent but I don't see anyone on their team who is going to play defense in front of the backline. Nagbe? Almiron? Are they just going to stick Larentowicz in when they play against better teams so they have someone in midfield playing defense? Going into the season it looks like a huge soft spot right in the middle of their spine to me. They may have a tough time matching up against other top teams while they destroy weak teams.

Check out Toronto's current roster. I think we are deeper than they are now.

Larentowicz had lost about 3 steps by the time he left Chicago which is why I think he played mostly CB during his LAG stop. Guy's got leadership skills but if they are planning on him being their defensive solution in the midfield when needed those offensive superstars better score a ton of goals.

I don't think they are done. They just started a USL team and will probably loan out players.

I am a Nagbe fan but I don't think his defense is quality enough to play the 6 for Atlanta in MLS much less for the USMNT. Replace Bradley with Nagbe and we have a soft spot right where sucky T&T killed us.

Agree Nagbe isn’t the person. Disagree he’d be worse than Bradley. Bradley is literally incompetent when it comes to defending. And he turns the ball over at the worst times.

I loathe him.

Atlanta just added an MLS Best XI midfielder and the most expensive player in league history and you don't think they have improved?

Is there any player that NYCFC fans would actually travel to the airport to welcome? We didn't do it for Villa, Lampard, or Pirlo. So I can't imagine there's anyone reasonable that would play for NYCFC that we would welcome in at airport. Orlando fans welcomed Dwyer. Philly fans welcome Accam.

When Jack comes back.

Have you been to a NYC airport?? They won’t let you in the terminal without a ticket. Should we all wait by the baggage claim?

That’s definitely Union staff, their families and a random or two that was waiting for the next flight one gate over.

I'm not saying meet him at the gate. There's always baggage claim and where you get a cab.

Did someone say “Bradley”?

A couple of tidbits on Atlanta.

First, Yamil Asad - he of the 7 goals and 13 assists - is not expected to return. He was on loan last season - very favorable wages of $150K. He wanted to return, but terms could not be agreed with his Club. Rumor that other MLS clubs, including Minnesota, are taking an interest.

Second, I see somewhat old news that they paid $1.7 million to have rights of first refusal on Lucas Gonzalez, a player out of Argentina. Basically, they would have the ability to match any transfer fee another team through the summer window. The figure is about 1/4 what he might fetch on the open market. This is an interesting approach, and I wonder how this affects the salary cap. I think it needs to in some form, but I am not sure whether it does.

I cannot stand the MLS rule that Atlanta retains Asad’s rights even though they couldn’t come to terms on an agreement. Cant get a deal done, lose the ability to dictate his movement within MLS.

Wow. Thanks for posting that. I cannot think of a justification for that fee not counting against the cap, and possibly requiring a DP slot just by itself, yet I also cannot think of a way that this counts and they comply with the cap.

Yep, that payment is a roster related payment and absolutely should count against their numbers. I’d be fine if it was money from a transfer above the $650k Gam, but I don’t think they’ve gotten anything yet, no transfers out, right?

I think you're right, but even if they have had transfer income, this has to be accounted for. As we've been discussing, that excess transfer money can be used to offset costs because real money is fungible, but it has no effect on cap hits. Even GAM, TAM or DP spends are rooted in the salary cap somehow. Every DP costs ~$500k against the cap (less for qualified young DPs but there is still a cap hit ), and I don't think that can be ameliorated with Garber Bucks and they don't have an open slot anyway. At $1.7mm, this is too high to buy down with TAM, I think, and even then can you buy someone down to a $0 charge with TAM? Even if they use the discretionary TAM on this, I don't think it works.

Pretty sure there is a minimum figure that TAM can be bought down to, but I don’t remember what I saw. $150k sticks out in my mind.

I wonder if MLS noodleheads actually realize what Atlanta is doing, and if not they should be alerted. Because if it’s legal and not a cap hit, then CFG should just carpet bomb every interesting player within the MLS cap structure and negotiate with their clubs to lay claim to them as a right of first refusal.

It would be perfect MLS if another team put Gonzalez on their MLS allocation [edit:discovery] list. AFAIK nothing prevents this. Atlanta has ROFR against the world, with respect to a sale by his current team. That doesn't mean they own his MLS rights.
