They rely on Atleti's youth to help field the team. Interesting. Sounds like a Girona type of thing with CFG.
Not arguing, just thinking out loud, the same logic could have applied to Pirlo? If he had a strong defensive Mid sidekick a la Vidal and other scoring options he could pass to, he would have performed as brilliantly as he had in Serie A?
That's pretty much exactly what it is. Atletico Madrid owned a team in India until recently, too, but they sold their share about a year ago because (IIRC) they thought that their Indian partners weren't willing to run the team in a way they were happy to be a part of.
Apple and oranges. Maxi doesn't need anybody to carry his water and cover for him - he can can carry the ball forward on his own, he can tackle the ball off an attacker, he can press, he can dribble through a pack of defenders, and he can even get into the box for a header. What he can't do is get past his own mental block to shoot, hence he needs some attackers to pass to.
Pirlo cannot do any of those things, at least not this past year. Pirlo needs a dedicated DMid to clean up behind him. The best Pirlo could do was receive the ball from the defender and make a quick pass. He can't tackle the ball off an attacker with any regularity. he can't press with any real success. he can't dribble through defenders. and he sure as hell can't get into the box for a header. Pirlo has even more of a mental block to shoot (at least Maxi did score some goals).
The version of Pirlo we received couldn't hit a decent free kick or corner kick to save his life either. I don't pretend to know why, but he seemed to age at warp speed as soon as he took the Juve shirt off. It was sad and puzzling.
On the contrary, Maxi is tiny but his physical fitness is superb. He's easily one of our fittest players. Whether all his running around and his million touches on the ball amount to something positive (I think they do) for us or not, is another issue. But he's in his physical prime.
Preseason starts on the 22nd. Definitely think we're doing the first portion of the camp (Jan 22 through the LA Galaxy game) in California.
I pity our youth everything except their opportunities to learn from David Villa, of which I am extremely jealous

Craziest thing. Saw an ad of Facebook and apparently NYCFC is going to play in the 2018 Suncoast Invitational with Montreal, Philly and the Tampa Bay Rowdies starting Feb 24.
However, searching around I can't find info anywhere other than this:

starting February 24th? isint that alittle too close to the start of the season? unless we only play one game like last time
