2018 Roster Discussion

And then there were two...

If Patrick Vieira is NOT going to play Tommy McNamara, unfortunately I feel he should be released out of shear respect. He's built to be a starter, he does not work well as a substitute. I would like to see T-MAC stay, it is nice to have someone from the tri-state area on the team.

But what's going on? We could've used him against New England on 3/24/2018, unfortunately he just rotted away on the bench. It must be extremely frustrating for him. And I cannot be the only one that feels this way.

This is great for the Mix pic alone. So much material there.

Is that George John next to Saunders?

I think so. Since RJ Allen is included, it's a post March photo. That being said George John was never a rostered player for NYCFC. Who is holding up the Mix photo?

My god, this team wouldn't have won more than 7 games in 2018 MLS.

Wow, props to Reyna. That trade set up David Villa for a hat trick and game winning penalty kick in the derby last year.

I seem to recall people around here hating that trade for a while.

I met Ryan when the Red Bulls sent him out as a promotion to meet my kid’s travel team. He let the kids try PKs against him and generally dogged it, except when my kid was lining up. My kid was wearing his NYCFC kit, and that got max effort from Ryan.

Nice guy overall. Had fun with it.

T-Mac would have been a great player in MLS in 2010. In 2018 he is all but obsolete except for maybe a team like the Rapids.

Probably not a point for this thread, but it is something to be concerned about: The league is growing way faster than the American player pool is. Frankly, MLS is pretty close to leaving the vast majority of American players in its dust, to becoming a league of only internationals. Which is fine, because we want to see the best possible quality on the field, but I'm not sure it's the best way to grow the sport at the grass-roots level in this country.

I think that depends on our academy systems. If we have young americans maturing and matriculating into these high quality international teams, then their level of training and level of play will increase along with the league. They will have to fight that much harder for minutes and be that much stronger players if they can earn their places.
