I think David Villa is still a DP-worthy player moving forward, I just do. He had an injury-plagued season. Was it a one-off or the beginning of the end?
Derek Jeter missed an entire season for the Yankees at age 39, then played almost every game at age 40. I'm just saying that a season where Villa missed 12 games due to injury does not mean it'll get worse next year. It might, but it might not.
So for me, based on that, I look at the way he's played when he's been on the field. He's been just as good this year as he was in his first 3 seasons, which tells me he still has more in the tank. He still scored at a pace that would have put him around 20 for the season had he stayed healthy. And I'm just not convinced an injury-plagued season is the beginning of the end for him.

In the games where Villa is out injured, the score still matters. You are advocating for the Lampard route again. You need to look at Villa at age 37, with a recent injury history and a decreased production level. You can't look at him as 32 years old again.
Except he doesn't have a decreased production level. He's still scoring relatively the same goal rate he did in the past. It's just barely lower, but not very noticeably. Had he played 34 games this year, his rate would have given him 20 goals. My point is that his injury history this season does not preview his injury history next year.

I'd like Ramsey a lot and I think Giroud could possibly light up MLS. I want Hendrick just because he's Irish though, not sure how he would do here. I like Cesc, but he may be over the hump potentially.
It all depends on who stays in our roster for 2019. If Herrera stays we don't need a high-priced 8. If Villa re-signs as TAM, then we should definitely target a DP striker and start preparing for life after DV. But we're already paying 800K to injury-prone Berget, and I don't see any way to offload him. To have a 800K guy be 3rd in the depth chart is a crime in this league. So maybe a lights-out winger? And definitely a TAM level LB.
Haha, I feel like baseball has to be a little different in terms of its athletic requirements, but I'm not an expert.
Unless they get that Serbian doctor who rubbed van Persie's knee in horse placenta, I am not optimistic. His knee straps are pretty robust right now. They might have to make them out of whale bone next year to keep him on the pitch.
I might have to dust off the old MLS Rules and Regulations, but how much flexibility do we have to sign him to a contract that is conditional on his number of appearances and general availability?
We could buy out Berget with that once a season contract buy out option. It would free up a ton of cap space for a guy Dome doesn't seem to be using when the games matter most.

My point is just that his injury history over his career is not long, and because of his production when he's been on the field, I'm willing to take a chance next year. Maybe it blows up, but even a 22-game Villa led us to 3rd in the East. So to me it's a fairly low-risk, high-reward gambit.
I feel like it's fairly high-risk, but as has been mentioned already, we don't really know what the opportunity cost is.
One concern which came to mind last night is that we might not be preparing as much as we could be for life after David. Maybe we are waiting for him to make a call, or to see how he feels at the end of the season. Or worse, we hold on and see how he feels closer to beginning of next season, and then end up making a panic replacement buy.
I’d rather buy out Dome.
Berget was a proven scorer (top scorer) in the same league that Tinny was the defender of the year. The guy can play so long as he isn’t pigeon-holed into a role that isn’t suited to his skill set.
He wasn’t used recently because he was coming back from injury. I suspect he’s still not 100% healthy, otherwise he’d have gotten a run out when Villa was subbed since he plays the same position and is also a very good high-pressing/defending forward.
To all y’all thinking off loading Isi is some brilliant tactic, I have major issues.
He’s obviously a very upper echelon player in this league. So what if he’s gone sometimes.
Do you want to win in July vs. Montreal in a match with 15k during an international break or compete for MLS cup?
Isi may be the most skilled and/or most productive player for the money in league. I can’t in good conscience argue that is a bad signing. I hope we keep him. He’s absolutely international class on the ball.
Somehow, somewhere, people are forgetting that we don’t have many creators like Isi in the league, forget just on NYC.

Glad to see we've locked up Johnson for four more years. And the money is certainly not unfair, either.
That's a $240K increase of what he's currently making.
And will keep him here until he's 33.
