Villa is still a top 10 goal scorer this season and the heart and soul of this team. Lampard was just some English guy who trolled Jack Harrison on Twitter.

In 2016, a 38 year old Frank Lampard scored 12 goals in 19 games. He played 1,280 minutes and scored 1 goal per 107 minutes.

In 2018, a 36 year old David Villa scored 14 goals in 23 games. He played 1,754 minutes and scored 1 goal per 125 minutes.

Villa is the rock of this franchise. But he was less productive than Lampard in his final year.

In all seriousness, it's just something inside will hate to see Villa gone... It's not about Villa's productivity, it's just... his presence adds something not statistically feelable to the team.

He's going to be borderline impossible to replace.

Someone mentioned Jeter as the comparison. I think that is great. I think Didi Gregorious has actually played better than Jeter towards the end, but he isn't the face of the franchise.

Who is on a billboard next year? None of the guys on the roster right now, that's for sure.

That's why they need a homerun signing. I doubt they do it.

Which is why... we keep Villa on for another year, even as a DP, because it gives an extra year of Villa, purely because it's an extra year of Villa. Who knows, maybe by then they'll have someone lined up, idk.

One side wants to keep re-signing Villa until it is proven he has nothing left. The upside is you never leave a good year of Villa on the table. This guarantees you get every possible good season out of him. The downside is it guarantees -- at some point -- a year of utter crap from one of your DPs because that is the only way this faction will acknowledge Villa is done.

The other side is willing to risk losing out on what might be additional good years from Villa in order to avoid have a guaranteed crap year from a DP at some point. The downside is Villa's replacement might not be as good, and a good year from Villa is probably valued more than an equally good year from any other player. The upside is the likelihood of a crap year from a younger DP is significantly lower.

The last year of Pirlo sucked. I'm not willing to guarantee another one. I thought this year was a risk that Villa deserved we take. It came up moderately good, all things considered. But it extended the team's perfect streak of having at least one DP miss 10+ games every damn season. Can we try to have one season where that doesn't happen? I'm surprised how many people are willing to accept that year after year after year and not even try to avoid it. Because Villa ain't playing 25 or more games next year so if we re-sign him that's essentially guaranteed it will have happened 5 years out of five, and it also might be much, much, worse.

Goals are not the only instrument of production. Lampard had 12g/2a vs 15g/5a right now for villa.

Also, a new DP, even one who doesn’t immediately blow us away, will have upside for future seasons — see Maxi’s improvement (although I thought he was great last year, this year he’s the true MVP). I say cut it now, hope Villa sticks around to contribute in some institutional role, and build for the future.

mgarbowskimgarbowski nails it. You’re playing with fire.

Remember how poor we were in 2015 with 1 DP and then the Lampard and Pirlo deals?

This year we played with 1 2/3 DPs. Villa missed 1/3 of the season. Maxi was brilliant. Medina was no better than Isi or Lewis or Berget.

That assists are not important for your attacking midfielder?

Lol, I love that this is a conversation about whether Villa should be renewed next season, but you guys got drawn into a conversation about Lampard vs. Villa, and maybe soon what the true definition of an attacking midfielder is. Countdown to stadium conjecture in 5, 4,

Also, if we learn from what other teams have done, Galaxy somehow got Zlatan on a TAM deal, and he was brilliant and in good shape physically, which means that DP wages for a 37 year old is overpaying. I mean, Zlatan's resume is every bit as impressive as Villa's, and despite his abrasive personality nobody ever faulted his fighting spirit, so they knew he wasn't here to lay low and collect a paycheck. He was a great deal for the Galaxy. That makes the Pirlo, Gerrard, Bradley, Lampard, etc deals look worst in retrospect.

This is Maxi's team now, and he's making 2 million. Maybe Villa can get something right up at the limit where you can still buy it down with GAM and have it not count as a DP?

Not when nobody else on the team save one of the strikers could score a goal. Somebody had to score and it shouldn’t have had to fall on a #8

Shall we make a 2019 roster discussion thread? I don’t think anything that happens from here on out will affect games played in 2018.
