Wow. Good stuff.

Great post SoupInNYC SoupInNYC

Charles Boehm is on ETR right now talking out of his butt.

Fact is - we've played a difficult schedule. The rest of our schedule looks easier - on paper. In fact, it clears up relatively soon.

I'm not familiar with Charles or ETR. What is he saying?

I'm not familiar with Charles or ETR. What is he saying?

He's a soccer reporter. I think for American Soccer Now. ETR is Extra Time Radio - a show on Sirius XM with Jason Davis that runs during the mid-day.

He essentially said we've come back down to earth and we don't look that good. Said Atlanta is the class of the league and Dallas is a close second. He mentioned that Dallas only has one loss. He also said that Atlanta is unbeatable at home - or something to that effect.

He failed to mention that we played Atlanta to a 2-2 result or that the lone Dallas loss was to NYCFC.

While I can see an argument for the first part of this, the part I bolded is kinda funny.

Atlanta home record: 5-2-1
NYCFC home record: 6-0-0

I wish at #10 (Portland) was a draw instead of the 3-0 beatdown it was.

NYCFC has one more away game against a top 10 team (at CLB). All other away games are basically against non-playoff teams (yes, ORL is in sixth now but free falling).

I agree but its way too early to write Toronto out of the playoffs.

Altidore is tentatively due back by the time we play them. Maybe 1 or 2 of their defenders return as well. We can beat them, but it will be a completely different team from the one that has compiled their terrible record and collapsed against the Crew.

Those players may not be game-fit. Just because somebody is available for selection does not mean they’re able to be effective for 90, or even a workman-like 60.

The most annoying thing about the reported Boehm analysis is the reasons he gave, which don't make sense, as others have pointed out. On substance though, I can't get annoyed at a guy for ranking 2 teams currently with better records as better, even though I can give reasons why he's wrong.

For narrative purposes NYC lost 3 out of 6 before Orlando, and looked bad doing it. Beating Orlando buys no respect. But, NYCFC play Atlanta, the Red Bulls and Columbus in the next 6 games. You can even add in Toronto, because all the MLS writers think they're about 2 times as good as their record. Win at least 3 of those 4, all at home, plus Montreal and maybe get some result in Chicago in the middle of all that and NYC will be flying high. At that point Boehm either gets on the NYC hype train or who cares.

I totally agree. The reason I got a little upset is because, like most MLS analysts, its fucking lazy. These guys consistently so lazy fucking analysis. Think about how much effort dummyrun dummyrun puts into his analysis just on our site. Boehm, Warshaw and the ilk are lazy. That pisses me off.

Warshaw's takes can be loopy and I don't follow MLS's audio/video stuff, but a lot of his columns are really good. His Hudson River Derby writeup, for example:

This tweet's from April but I thought it was a neat way to visualize our easy run-in:

I don't suppose you know if his data accounts for H/A differences, but I'll ask anyway.

Don't know if this is the best way to visualize it, but I whipped up some H/A-specific projections just for you.

This is skewed because our away matches so far have been against the top teams in the league. If we already had road matches vs the Minnesotas & Montreals of the league, our xGD would be much better on the road.
