2019 Offseason Thread

Nah, I’ve engaged you plenty in good faith, and think you make pretty good observations when you don’t rely on pure meta data to cloud what the eye can see so clearly. But I’ll call out false and misleading statements when I see them, and if that includes the one on Lewis above or the tons of posts saying the club was about to hit its stride under Dome because of 35 shots off target, then I guess that’s in bad faith.

Look man this shit is incredibly tedious. If you want to have the same two arguments over and over, or if you have questions about how certain stats work, feel free to shoot me a DM and I'm happy to chat there. Let's save these boards for substantive conversations about NYCFC and take the weird grudges somewhere else.

The loss and draw I mentioned earlier were Seattle and Vancouver. Lewis had some defensive lapses in both of those, especially on Seattle's third goal. That's the week fan sentiment about the team started to turn, and I think it's when Dome decided Lewis wasn't worth the risk even though he'd been saving our asses on offense.

At Columbus we were shorthanded but started Wallace and Tommy over Lewis (it didn't go well). New England and D.C. were during the international break when we had like twelve people in the squad for a double game week and Lewis still couldn't get a start, so yeah, the writing was pretty much on the wall by then.

Thanks for tracking it down, Summary assuming I counted correctly:

15 appearances
1 start
14 Sub appearances
5 times subbed on when winning
6 times subbed on when behind
3 times subbed on when tied

4 times after Lewis subbed the result of the game was better than it was when he entered
1 time after Lewis subbed on the result of the game was worse than it was when he entered
9 times the outcome of the game was the same as it would have been had the game ended when Lewis entered

I still blame Sweat for that 1 time he came on and the result was worse than when he subbed.

Just wanted to provide some perspective to how the season was going at that time and some major landmarks. sorry if it seems intrusive or not necessary.

Feel free to block me any time, but I’m not the one claiming “bad faith” and “weird grudges” so maybe it’s just tedious defending a bad position. adam adam summarized Lewis’ matches and gbservis gbservis collated the data and it showed you misstated how/when Lewis was used since he wasn’t solely used in a winning position and the team secured more points than they lost.

From someone who has taken the advice he offers below, it's good advice.

Nah... I like Bendik better than that. There were a couple of games in 2016-17 when he stood on his head against us.

Interesting point in this article from the MLS website. Atlanta declined the option on Parkhurst, making him a free agent. However, this may have just been a ploy to leave him exposed in the Expansion Draft without risk. If Cincy select Parkhurst, he is still a free agent. In that case, he could just elect to sign with Atlanta anyway - which is apparently where he wants to play.

Clever.

ATL is always 2 steps ahead.

One reason I wish we would dial back the #DomeOut stuff, besides the fact that it's dumb, is that managers who are feeling pressure to get immediate results are less likely to play kids. Lewis only got looks when we were winning. Sands played well when we were forced to rely on him but didn't sniff the squad afterward. If we want guys like Scally to get their chances next season, we're going to have to be patient and think about whether maximizing our points in March and April is the thing we care about most.

Hold on- so if a player becomes a free agent, then he doesn't have to sign for t he expansion side that selected him? Then I don't understand how the expansion draft works. I thought all players selected must negotiate with the selected side?

I think another way of looking at it is that the expansion team basically steps into the shoes of the team that they selected the player from. If the player was under contract to the old team, he is under contract to the new team. If the player was out of contract but not a free agent, then the expansion team holds his rights for MLS but has to negotiate the contract. If the player is a free agent, then the expansion team holds whatever rights the old club had to negotiate with the free agent, but that's it.

This seems no different than the stupid Discovery List shenanigans. Atlanta should have to pay the obligatory $50k/$75k GAM to negotiate with him if Cincy selects him (his rights) in the draft.

I don't know. Kind of seems to me that it's on Cincy for selecting a guy who can go out and negotiate with any other team in the league.

If the draft doesn’t secure the rights to a player, then it isn’t a draft. Parkhurst is eligible for the draft, so his rights are up for selection. If his rights aren’t up for selection, then he shouldn’t be listed as draftable.

How about this. If a free agent is taken in the Expansion Draft, and then goes back and signs with his original team, then the original team sends the expansion team some minor compensation - like $50K in GAM or something.
