2019 Offseason Thread

last year Reyna was interviewed left and right about the offseason, and i remember it happening around the time of the combine since he was there scouting. I wonder if that'll happen again this year, though.

We should have already heard from him. Even if it's through an interview in the Athletic or the NY Post -- we need to hear from the sporting director about what the offseason plans are.

I think it's easy to "trust" that they're doing the work, but we'd like to hear something from them. This goes back to the transparency debate we had on here a few weeks ago.

You're right. Let's just hope we start hearing any info at all. I'm hoping that over time that new pr guy can ease that sort of style into the team as well.

But some outlet has to want to interview him.

To aid the discussion, here are the off-season acquisitions before each of the last 3 seasons and this coming season, with dates. Summer transfers and players acquired through the Superdraft are not included.

Last season we had a comparatively early start. Prior to 2017, our acquisitions came comparatively late, which many believed contributed to a slow start to the season.

Thanks for this!

Wow, January 27th to February 15th 2017 was extraordinary! Let's hope we can go on a similar run this offseason!

But some outlet has to want to interview him.

That is absolutely not the issue. The issue is that NYCFC refuses to make him available. Surely the Athletic or the Post, which have both devoted resources to NYCFC coverage, would run an interview with the team's GM on offseason planning.

To play devil's advocate -- I feel like we were hearing lots of rumors before our deals last year. Medina was rumored for weeks before they made it official on Dec. 31. We have heard absolutely no rumors this winter, which is probably part of the reason some fans are wondering what, exactly, we're up to.

We know for a fact that the Post wants to interview Claudio a whole lot?

I’ll take your point on the Athletic but let’s remember who their “journalist” is

So your argument is that there isn't room in the sports section for NYCFC?

The Rangers are awful, the Knicks are a disaster, the Giants and Jets both stink, and baseball is in the offseason. What other team are they writing about in the sports section? Yes, they'd absolutely have room for a Claudio Reyna offseason interview. 100%.

This is awesome! But I need it to be sized proportionately. So here goes. I've condensed to 3 day blocks just to make it not have to scroll too much and added some color coding for what I think we view(ed) as signings that had an impact. I also made it read left to right for chronology.

So in 2017 and 2018 we made significant impact signings in December. But 2017 also gives indication that we could have an entire productive, exciting window all happen after January 20. Or at least, I would be pretty happy if we signed the equivalent of Callens, Ring, Herrera and Moralez this offseason.

And anyone who wants to use this without recreating, here is the google sheet.

Wait, has the club spaced out new signings to every three days? Is that some CFG policy?

I’m not arguing anything. I’m simply pointing out we get very limited coverage on the whole. That leads me to believe that they don’t give a shit about us.

I think there is at least one rando big soccer guy at all of the big papers and this is the time of year they struggle to fill column inches -- so I would guess it would take a minor outreach effort to get articles in the Times and Post at least.

You think and you guess. But there’s no evidence that’s true.

I know this game! I used "think" as a figure of speech, but now "I think" you're pretending that you took it literally so you could write a dicky response!

But yes, you are literally correct in your statement that I do not have definitive proof that it would take minor outreach from NYCFC to get them to write an article. It's just how sports team PR departments and newspapers work, but no, I can't prove it in court.

There is a very very small audience for nycfc content.

If that wasn’t true, they would publish more content. Look at who The Athletic hired to cover us. It’s a joke.

Not sure if this is relevant in this thread... But talked to some family friends who had season tickets. They mentioned they dropped them... Thats like 15 season tickets.... I think games will look empty next year.. Unless we bring a big attraction/DP signing.....maybe a Chicharito that could attract Mexicans or something otherwise our stadium attendance keep declining
