2019 Offseason Thread

It's possible that the best thing that could happen to this club this year is missing the playoffs with sub-20k attendance. Be so bad that changes are forced. I'd rather have that than a 5-7 seed and a road playoff loss.

Villa missed half the matches last season. Toronto will be better. They are probably 4-6 in the east at this point with this roster anyway. I think attendance will be sub 20k at this point no matter what with all the weekday matches and no star power left on the roster. I’m not sure missing the playoffs triggers as much change and fans not showing up anymore. But I’m also beginning to believe CFG just doesn’t give a shit either way, attendance or standings.

CFG should realize their brand outreach only works if they have brand values and demonstrate those values. From their website:

"It is our ambition to increase participation in football on and off the field, to find and develop the best footballing talent, and to deliver an exciting and forward playing game.

By achieving these ambitions – playing attractive football, engaging our community of passionate fans and adopting a uniquely global yet local approach – we are growing a sustainable and socially responsible organisation, consistent with what ‘City’ football has meant to people for over a century."

I see very little of any of that. Some positive signs from a slowly developing academy? Other than that it's been the David Villa show. Imagine this franchise over the last four years without him. (Won't have to starting in two weeks.)

To people still clamoring for a USL team to bridge our academy to the top level, zoom out. We *are* the "USL team" for academy grads that don't make it to Europe.

CFG has no brand outreach for the club supporters- they’ve taken for granted the STH and don’t return the loyalty with any semblance of investment or demonstration of ambition. I mentioned to a few others before the end of last season, when Dome had the team in a fiery tailspin, that the only way forward is for a scorched earth ending - the team has to become so bad that changes, either with all decision making employees or ownership, have to be made. Making the playoffs and crashing out would just prolong the yearly misery of mediocrity - they club has to miss the playoffs and look awful doing so, like RedWedding bad over and over.

I know that’s not a popular opinion, but supporting the club this year with the crapass schedule already has sapped enthusiasm, and I’m not holding out hope for first-choice signings, so if writing this year off means change for next year, it’s an easy choice.

100 percent agree with you. I traveled a lot last year to see the team play on the road, especially in the early part of the year as Vieira's NYCFC was fun and entertaining. Dome's NYCFC was not.

I'm not planning to travel a lot this season to watch Dome's NYCFC play on the road. I don't need to fly to another city to be depressed.

...

On another note, we only have 21 contracted players on the roster (18 outfield players, 3 goalkeepers), 1 bonafide offer (Abdul-Salaam, what is happening with that anyhow), 2 SuperDraft picks (not signed to a contract yet).

We are in a terrible position going into preseason. I think we'll have some trailists and academy products, but we need some signings.

We still have 3 weeks before you have to panic about the roster.

I feel like we go through this every offseason. Let's give them a chance to build the roster before we start wigging out.

And I'm perfectly fine, BTW, with waiting until the summer window to bring in a DP. Remember Seattle a couple years ago? They brought in Alonso in July, then lost about one game the rest of the way on their way to MLS Cup. The goal isn't to be the best team in April, the goal is to be the best team in November. We've collapsed down the stretch each of the last two years, so that's my biggest concern.

I think you mean Lodeiro, but that doesn’t take away from your point

So many things to pull from that. And fuck this piece of shit mediocre club.

Is it difficult to recruit in the winter? Absolutely. But guess what, money talks. Chelsea announced a £60 million deal for Pulisic that takes affect in July. Go spend some money.

He mentions Europe. Does he not know that the best MLS DPs have come from South America? Or Mexico? Go do your fucking business there.

I agree you can replace one player with three if we’re talking about goals. What you can’t do in MLS is spread $6 million of salary across three other players. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

If you read that quote and are anything but hopeful, you need a lobotomy.
This club blows

Have you 3 met?

They brought in the Uruguayan midfielder whose name I can’t remember. Alonso was there already, as was Deuce, as was Morris.
