I believe they have fined them a few times but not applied any meaningful sanctions/punishment.

Let's be honest, anyway. FIFA's punishments are a joke. I mean, they like banning countries from tournaments if their governments interfere with the running of the national FA, which is a far bigger thing although everyone always seems to back down immediately after so it's hard to tell if they would honestly follow through, but when it comes to anything it's just stupid. What is $20k to the Mexican FA anyway? It's the same in UEFA, and probably all the other confederations. Why would a national FA give two hoots about fixing their racism problem or their crowd violence if they get charged about the weekly wage of a board executive for it?

ummm ... star wars night was 1,00,000x better this year. They had an R2D2 in the rich people pitchside seats ... possibly brought to the game by a rich person ... not the team ... ok never mind it sucked again ... I mean seriously how hard is it to pull this shit off? I'll take the job and get it done like whoa!

A board member of Third Rail was elected to the Independent Supporters Council- a nonprofit that represents supporters groups and has pledged to support the "show racism the red card" and LGBQT pride causes. Hopefully we can see them work together with the Club to improve the experience this season.

All I really want for Star Wars night is for Stormtroopers to replace the FDNY and NYPD for the Tunnel of Honor. And maybe the ref could wear a Darth Vader mask...

Hi All. Been a long time. Would love some help.

Had email exchange with rep (bel0w) about puto chant. Looks like they might take my suggestion as soon as Montreal match (9/26). Unfortunately, I won't be there.

Just asking if you all could please post after the match.
    1. Were there cards in your section (and what section is that)?
    2. Did people hold them up during goal kicks?
    3. Did it change any behavior - puto chant or otherwise?
    Thanks.

    Here's the recommendation I sent:

I have an additional thought on our discussion about the puto chant.

As I said, I think the club’s silence expresses tacit approval, but so does the fans’ silence. It grates on me every time I don’t confront those who do this.

If you wanted to build more fan culture into this, you could do so without asking fans to report each other or directly confront. Imagine if you printed out 5x7 cards with a red circle and slash through “puto chant” in the middle of the circle and placed these cards on all seats at that end of the stadium. Fans could hold the cards up during goal kicks, thus expressing silent disapproval.

The effect of the crowd goes both ways. People can feel shame pretty quickly.

Of course, this would not work as a one time action. You’d need to be prepared to distribute these for several games.

If you wish to discuss, I’m happy to talk any time.

    Thanks, as always, for listening.
P.S. Side note. I've been lurking for a long time. I miss a lot of you all and appreciate you keeping these boards alive, especially those encouraging a more thoughtful and respectful culture in this community.

It’s so much harder at the away matches with big groups. In Montreal, where the group was much smaller, all it took was a quick request from one of the reps to skip the “make some f*ing” noise and it became “New York noise”. But, at least they’re making an effort.

To be fair, "make some f--king noise" is pretty juvenile. This is supposed to be a family sport; we can keep our chants PG. Using expletives doesn't make you cool or hip. And by the way, "Make some New York noise" is still a very good chant and an easy change to make that's inclusive for fans from age 6-90.

Hmm. I don't think I swear to be cool or hip. It just feels good sometimes. It's how I think a lot of reasonable, law-abiding people talk quite a lot of the time. It feels genuine.

You know, unlike "Make some New York noise".

I get that people might be offended by it. And I guess that has to be balanced against the desire of people to chant the unmodified version (and any number of other desires from other stakeholders).

    But how?
