Atlanta Postmatch

We had 7 or 8 really bad minutes and Atlanta were ruthless. It may be time for Brillant to get a chance, and Mata's absence is really starting to hurt. In general, Atlanta made our lack of quality on the ball at our full back positions pay. White and Sweat really struggled against the press. Maxi also had a relatively quiet game. We looked OK apart from that. If we put some of those early chances away and get the calls we deserve, it's a different game. I don't think Callens was fouled, FWIW.

Also I think that if Pirlo had watched his mark run into the top of the box like Mikey and Ring did on Almiron and whoever else it was for the second goal, he would be getting slaughtered right now.

I'm actually proud of the boys for not capitulating after that 8 minutes of horror. In past years, that would have been another RBW, Toronto in the playoffs, or Mexico vs. Chile. We showed a lot of maturity, guts and mental strength to steady ourselves and make a go of the second half, and I earnestly thought a comeback was on.

Also, would be fine with never having to hear Taylor Twellman call a game again. Dude adds zero insight and a lot of hot air.
And he brings none of the Lalas cache. Lalas at least does every interview with every shitty pod (even was on bcr last week) or local radio show. He's a total blowhard, but he's self-aware. Twellman not so much. Twellman is riding the coat tails of what Lalas has done.

I don't like Lalas's commentary, but he's had an oursized impact on getting soccer coverage to actually exist in the US.

I've always liked Ian Joy, but he's obvious our home color commentary person. I don't like Janusz. Of the national personalities, Wynalda is great. He's annoying but he's like drunk uncle of MLS. He's tell it like it is. Stu Holden is probably the number 1 guy at FOX now as Lalas is used as a studio person than a booth person. Donovan also had some air time but needs a bit more uptick in personality, too dry at times.

I'd like if FOX or ESPN tried three people in the booth like NBC does with the prime game of the Premier League.

I didn't see the RSL game and can't comment if the show yesterday was worse than that, but it really was below the normal NYCFC level. The team couldn't handle even the basics, never mind more sophisticated build-ups.

And yet Atlanta were mostly lucky during their three-goal spree. The first was a result of slack defending. I think both Ring and Lopez should have tracked back quicker. Most goals are scored from inside the box, and that's were you need bodies between the ball and the goal.
Before that the linesman had twice wrongly flagged for offside when NYCFC went forward. The second goal looked like an offside at first, but highlights showed that it probably wasn't. It was yet again bad defending, and there I think Chanot misread the situation and let Villalba into a scoring position.
Anyone who's played the game knows that at that point Johnson should have got a tactical "injury", just to stop the play for several minutes, and to help the team get out of the shambles that it was turning into. Alas, he didn't, and Callens shat himself completely for the third. Without that goal, there could still have been a chance.

The second half wasn't really much better, although the consolation goal was nicely built up from the defense up until the execution. Harrison's finishing was with one word sublime.

Moralez had a stinker, it was perhaps the worst I have seen from him. Sweat had his moment (crossing for the goal) but he plays in the wrong league, fullstop. White was clumsy, but subbing him by RJ Allen was daft. Allen was a running disaster. Wallace couldn't control the ball, and Villa looked tired and uninspired. I don't know whether Lopez really has the quality to play on this level, but if he does, he didn't show it yesterday. Quite the opposite, he was a no-show throughout the game. To complete the miserable day, Johnson didn't spread any self-confidence in his fellow players. Better not mention Callens.

Harrison at least tried, and Chanot was basically ok. Ring didn't really let anyone down, and made several important interceptions, but his long balls were wayward and to no use. After the Atlanta goals, he looked really pissed-off, and swayed his scythe on Almirón in total frustration. I don't envisage any violence, but it nearly made me smile to see that tackle, although it meant a booking and a suspension, and later on in the game Almirón retaliated with a bad tackle, which the referee overlooked. That could have caused a bad injury, because Almirón hit Ring's instep recklessly from behind.

The White/Allen substitution underlined Vieira's managerial performance yesterday. Don't want to say anything else about his game "plan" - there hardly was any.

And the last comment is on the referee: I wonder if it's possible to see as poor and inconsistent refereeing display anymore during the whole season. I doubt it.

I just so happened to step aside in my office during those 15 minutes where we allowed all 3 goals. Put my phone away and went right back to work. That was some of the most god awful defending I've ever seen. WTF was callens doing tip going the ball back to goal instead of back passing or kicking out of play. In those 15 minutes I also saw some horrendous refereeing. To hear it didn't change much during the game is so MLS it doesn't even surprise me.
This is a Well Meaning warning to you about your future Boss . I sure hope in your new venture there's young people and not a Bunch of Southern Good Old Boy's! Don't go showing up with a NYCFC shirt to the NASCAR people !! First off they'll be too stupid to understand then hold it against you because it's NY . Some factions there still fight the Civil War just smile and say your from Florida they'll like that !! This is your heads up Trust Me you'll need it !!

Odd that Vieira's post game press conference was not aired on Facebook live nor has one been posted on YouTube or elsewhere.

Was one conducted last night? NYCFCfan

First match I've missed in a long time, home or away. Was initially disappointed till I came here and for the reviews of what happened. Thanks to all of you for fixing that! Watching just the highlights things look bad for Sweat, the goals start down his side and end with him slowing jogging into the top of the frame way behind the play only after the ball is in the back of the net. Not sure what he was thinking.

Thank you for pointing this out. I've said it over and over and no one wants to acknowledge the fact that he half-assed it, dragging us into a massive deficit.

When you have the talent of Ben Sweat, you better run like your ass is on fire all the time. He didn't come close. Massive lack of ability and effort.

Dude went from "I'm so thankful to be back on an MLS roster" to "I'm an MLS starter and I'm way too good to play defense" in about 2 games.

This was also super clear in the Dallas game. The guy was torched down that side the whole match. I still don't know how we only conceded one goal in that one.

Probably nothing to do with ability and everything to do with injury. He had an ACL tear and went through serious rehab to get back into shape. He's probably just not match ready yet.

When did this happen? I have no recollection of the injury and I feel like an ACL tear would stand out.
