Going back to your prior post, I don't think it's fair to call people glory-hunters for getting Mix (or any player really). First, that term doesn't really exist in America. We call people who start claiming a team when they are doing well "bandwagon-ers" or "bandwagon fans". Secondly, Mix is a bit of exactly what you were saying about being the hard-working guy, but because of his ability to connect with fans, propensity to play with a little "flair" that most Americans don't use, and his incredible hair, he's a fan-favorite. Lots of people here called for him to be signed well before Lampard or Villa.
As for wearing a shirt with someone else's name on it, I can see it either way. I just figure if I'm going to wear the shirt, I might as well represent my favorite player. I generally don't wear sports jerseys, but I don't mind soccer shirts because they look like an actual shirt. As a grown man, I would never wear an American football or basketball jersey. I will wear a soccer jersey. I would maybe wear a baseball shirt, but I haven't since I hung up the spikes.
All that being said, if it's not game day at the stadium or watching the game at home or the bar, I would not wear a soccer or any other sports jersey. I notice people in NYC doing it, but even though I've lived here a long time, I was raised in the South, where college football is king. If you are a grown-ass man and wear a jersey in that environment, people will think you're either a douchebag wannabe or a wal-mart shopping "sidewalk" fan (which is probably close to what you call a "plastic"). Those norms mostly stuck with me, so I get where you're coming from.
