Unfortunately, Pirlo will never be benched. Unless he's injured.
Fun fact, the only regular season game he was benched for was last year against Philadelphia on the road.

We go to the same barbershop, I'll pass on the message.

Also, Filthy Rich Barbershop is the GOAT.

and finally...

Pirlo has played 50 regular season games for us.

Thoughts?

Massive disappointment. One goal scored. Has never dominated a game. Routinely made to look silly defensively by nobodies.

ESPN got something right for once. He's a luxury in MLS. A luxury we can't afford with the rest of this roster.

Prediction for tomorrow night's lineup. Coach V sticks with the formation, but replaces Brillant with White and rewards Tommy with a run out for Wallace.

Bench: Lurch, Yugo, RW, Q-Tip, Camargo, Herrera, Brilliant!

If we have to give this formation a run, I wouldn't be mad with your suggestions at all. Would rather see Fred central and Chanot out right. I just don't see how this formation fits our squad, or even most squads.

I was referring to the question asked in the article. Is he a luxury. Great question

Well, to be clear, not my suggestion, just my prediction on what Coach V will pick.

I suspect the reason Chanot was in the middle last week had something to do with the passing responsibility at the different CB positions and wanting the best passer in the middle. I'd have to watch the game again more closely to be sure, but that's my guess.

Of course, I think he cuts out Freddie and goes with White at RCB given his good form at RB in the first few games.

If he goes with his dumb ass formation experiment again and drops points to the two worst teams in the league two weeks in a row, I'll be very upset.
I feel your pain and I don't get how the formation is supposed to work, but also understand that it will take some time to get used to. PV has earned a lot of my trust. Also, the last two MLS Cup winners only barely qualified for the playoffs. If anything, I'm glad he's trying to get it right now and not changing things up in the playoffs again (the last time I think we saw this formation).

Are there other teams that anyone knows of that play in competitive leagues and switch from 4 to 3 at the back during the season? Its a huge switch to do, and you are asking a lot of the players to know responsibilities in each different formation. Toronto switched full time to 3 at the back, they don't go back and forth. Just seems pointless. No teams we have ever played have been surprised or unprepared for it.

The time to experiment is in preseason, but we cant seem to get our team together until 3 days before each season starts. I just don't see the point of it. A good 4 man backline can shut down any opposition, you only do it if you specifically acquire the right players for the system. We specifically went and got players that fit well in a 433, why dick around with that?

It just seems like he wants to be known as some tactical genius that can get his teams to do whatever he wants. He's done a great job with the 433 build from the back system, but this craziness and his crazy subs sometimes drive me nuts.

The Union are not only last place in the East but last place in the Supporters' Shield race.

3 points or we riot!

Chelsea has fluctuated between 3/4 at the back this season.

I remember us switching it up and confusing teams last year. From some light Internetting:

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/us/feat...rols-play-w-m-formation-giovinco-takes-charge

Granted, Vanney switched as well, and it worked. And we tried it again against Toronto and it really didn't work in the playoffs.

So how long do we give it? I'm not sure. I'm still sanguine. Don't get me wrong, I understand and share some of your frustrations, but I also think it's important to innovate, experiment and avoid complacency.

We know that right back is a problem and that Matarrita doesn't stay home, and that Pirlo could use a defensive buddy. Vieira may have been trying to solve these problems with this formation. It's been one game, early in the season, against opposition that we may have thought was soft enough to take some risks against. Sometimes the gamble doesn't work out. On the other hand, moving Iraola to CDM was probably his most inspired experiment last year.

All in all, I'm fine with occasional failures if we show that we can learn from them.
