If I had to build the best squad I could out of those players (with the 5 intl rule) I think it would be:

----------------Johnson--------------
-------Brillant----------Callens----------
White-----------------------------Sweat---
-----------Ring--------Stertzer---------
-----------------Moralez----------------
Lewis---------------------------Harrison---
-------------------Villa----------------------

That lineup gives me a happiness level of 100 for this game:

Happiness deductions:
Lopez plays -50
Villa sits -20
Johansen starts -10
Rawls starts -30
Pirlo starts -10
lose the game -150
Why is Villa playing GK with Maxi as his only CB? That could really cause us problems defending crosses.

By my calculation, based on the post above, we will need to start at least 1 regular starter (at CB) and can start as many as 7: Villa, Harrison, Minimax, Ring, Callens, White, Johnson (note that doesn't count Pirlo). The other 4 usual starters (Matarrita, Wallace, Chanot and Herrera) are not available.

I think we sit one of Callens and White and maybe one of Villa and Harrison. We could go entirely without starters in the midfield, but I suspect we will play our two starters there.

Remember that because of depth issues created by international duty, injuries and roster restrictions, at least 5 and probably all 7 of the available starters will at least be in the 18 and available to play.
If I had to guess, the backline will be Sweat-Callens-Brillant-Allen. I figure:

  • Sweat and Allen are both reserves at this point and won't start at the weekend, so he'll want to get them both some time. At the same time, they are credible starters in a match you are trying to win. Gomez is the more exotic choice, but while I'm curious to see him, it seems less likely and sensible to me to play him rather than guys who are now reserves who will struggle for time, but are more likely to be needed at some point and are ahead of him on the depth chart.

  • Brillant seems a lock for Chanot. I suspect Callens gets the nod on the theory that playing Brillant and White at CB is a bit scary and because there is some merit to giving Callens an early look at the RB press in advance of the league match in ten days.
I'm having more trouble coming up with a "likely" prediction further up the field, but a few thoughts:

  • Though I'm pretty down on him this year and I think PV is, I suspect Tommy will get a start and the question is just whether it is in the CM or on the wing. Sort of the same theory as Allen/Sweat above. After a run over the past month, he could be facing a lot of time on the bench in the league, at least, in the next six weeks.

  • I'd love to see the Harrison-Lewis wing setup, just to get a look at it. I could easily see Harrison starting with the idea that Lewis comes in for him after 60 or so depending on the game situation.

  • Genuinely no idea whether Villa starts, though I think he will. Genuinely no idea if Pirlo starts, though I hope he does not!

I bet it's basically this but Lopez for Stertzer.

I think TMac starts on the wing, because after Harrison and Lewis, we have no wing depth for this match (Camargo, Wallace, Mataritta with international duty, Khiry injured). I would love to see a decent amount of Lewis-Harrison on the wings, but I'm guessing it will be with Lewis coming on for TMac.

Good stuff, although I think you mean Allen instead of Callens at the end of the 2nd bullet.

My guess is that Coach V is intending to start most (but not all) of the first team guys and will then sub as appropriate under the circumstances. So, if we have a lead, Lewis for Jack, but if we are behind, maybe Lewis comes in for TMac.

Remember that if you put in a starter at the beginning and can't sub him out, you are potentially writing a check for 120 minutes. That's a lot with Seattle coming to town in 65 hours. That's why as I think about it, I can see Coach V using 3-4 of the potential starting field players instead of all 6.

They've been off for ten days and have seven days off after Seattle, I think the rest factor is being overblown. Especially with half the team unavailable.
Word. Red Bulls' next game is on Sunday so they have an additional day of rest and will be more likely to play starters. This should nudge us towards playing a more competitive side.

Seattle plays on Saturday against us, but their next game after that is next Wednesday, so they had more incentive to play less of their best XI in the Open Cup and may be slightly incentivized to play a weaker XI against us. So if their selection were a nudge towards playing a second string for us, their upcoming schedule should negate that.

My reasoning is probably a little contorted, but I'd like to see us put as many starters out there as possible. Maybe with some consideration towards who may be more crucial against Seattle, who I admittedly know little about.

We don't necessarily know the depth chart for some positions right now. Maybe Gomez has shown well in practice and has surpassed Allen? Maybe Lewis has surpassed McNamara and Camargo on the wing? I assume McNamara is higher up the depth chart than Mikey Lopez, but behind Pirlo.

I am confident that PV thinks the line-up he is putting out there tonight will be the strongest line-up he can muster, given injuries and international duty.

Is anyone still on the fence about going to this? I've finally decided that I'm going.

Or if you are going, PM me where you may be sitting so I can buy a ticket in a friendly area :)

just go and try to sit at the away section if they let you

Section 111 is where the party is going to be. $38.50 included fees for a seat next to the NYCFC bench.
