Is this thread about to get hijacked by a Robert Moses discussion?

Can't say many forum audiences would have any idea about Robert Moses. One of the many reasons I am proud to be a part of this one.

Well played.

Think, coverage of our show starts in 24 hours. It's 7 PM in Vancouver in two minutes. Unless we get a win, it's going to be disappointing staying up until 12 AM for the end of the match.

One last turf point and I'll move on. If turf were to start meaning fake grass exclusively, and stopped meaning real grass, I'd be completely OK with that. When it comes to language I'm generally a descriptivist not a proscriptivist. Language changes, words alter their meanings, and I'm fine with that. But a word that means one thing and it's direct opposite -- in the exact same context -- is nuts.

The word loses all meaning at all in that case.

Not sure why turf can't mean fuzzy stuff on the ground. Astroturf and grass are not opposites to me. Not sure what the opposite of grass is, maybe deep space or something.

The issue with "turf" and it's various meanings is this. There is no short, easy way to refer to the fake stuff. "Astroturf", "artificial turf", "artificial surface" and the like are all long and polysyllabic. This means people don't like to use them, at least not exclusively and certainly not in casual conversation.

So, there needs to be a monosyllabic term for fake grass, and so far it seems to be shortening "artificial turf" to "turf" - which has it's problems because "turf" means grass, which is why the word "artificial" was put in front of it to begin with.

Personally, I think "carpet" or "rug" would be better, but those haven't gained currency.

Because the whole point is to distinguish between grass and the artificial stuff. When you ask "what type of surface does that stadium have" and the answer comes back "turf," you know nothing.

Not sure that word is capable of doing what you are asking. IMO if your question is what is the surface in the stadium the answer would have to be natural grass/turf etc or artificial grass/turf etc. I think turf more implies ground covered by some material. Keep the ball on the turf. he was driven into the turf. YMMV

Based on Pirlo's inclusion in the prior game, I think we see him in the midfield along with Ring and Herrera. McNamara gets moved to LW with Villa and Harrison up top.

Based on this, I think we have a different style of play from what we've seen in the past couple games.
Or J-Lew (but probably you're right)

One thing we know for sure, MLS's website does NOT have the correct starting lineup:

New York City FC
  • Suspended: NONE
  • Int’l Duty: Sean Johnson (United States), Miguel Camargo (Panama), Rodney Wallace (Costa Rica)
  • Injury Report: OUT: F - Khiry Shelton (hamstring injury), D - Ronald Matarrita (foot surgery 6/30)
Projected Starting XI (4-2-3-1) GK: Eirik Johansen – R.J. Allen, Maxime Chanot, Alexander Callens, Ben Sweat – Yangel Herrera, Alex Ring – Jack Harrison, Tommy McNamara, Rodney Wallace – David Villa

Good job, guys.

I don't know.... first we go North of the Wall to meet the Whitecaps on their frozen turf.... then TFC marches south to our keep. It is written that days later the Fire arrives at our doorstep..... only to see TFC rise up from their ashes again to do battle and then have to put down the False King RB as they ride from the South...... :sweatdrops: :sweatdrops::fire::sweatdrops:&:japanesegoblin::crown: over five matches - that's a LOT of coincidences.....

I didn't even realize that. Maybe Ring + Lamps = James Rodriguez. We cheered as one's watch ended, I'd cry if we lost Ring. But then we would have the Prince who was Promised.
