Interesting. Shelton being back does give us more depth up front and therefore more flexibility.
It also creates hesitation by their outside backs knowing any of the forwards can beat them on a break, and Shelton plays a pretty tenacious press - that was one thing I noticed about his game the other night: he's finally figured out how to get his body between the opponent and the ball (like Hererra) and he's pretty clean swinging his leg around the player to dispossess him of the ball. A bunch of times he flat out picked the pocket of the RB player.

I'd go with Ben Baer on Twitter, he's MLS's stat guy.

Looks like Alessandrini has been knocked up, but Sigi is pretty confident he'll play this weekend. Jon Dos Santos will likely still come off the bench. Good opportunity to get 3 on the road.

The only other time Maxi was out of the starting lineup was during the following 4 game stretch. I've put forth the starting midfield and the score for each, along with any changes from usual at wing.

NYC 2 - 1 SEA | Ring - Herrera - Harrison | Tommy at LW
NJR 0 - 2 NYC | Ring - Herrera - McNamara
NYC 3 - 1 MIN | Ring - Herrera - Harrison | Tommy at RW; Pirlo subbed in for Wallace at 78'
VAN 3 - 2 NYC | Ring - Herrera - Pirlo | Tommy at LW; Maxi subbed in for Pirlo at 75'

I actually think they have a lineup problem. I think ultimately it will see JJJ on the bench.

It's going to be funny to see the clamoring when Mac gets the start. :tearsofjoy:

This is another trap game and I HATE the way we've performed in trap games to date. We have to be sharp and aggressive. Pirlo is not the answer. There is no replacement for Maxi so we modify the shape and stick to our identity.

Lewis - Villa - Harrison
T-Mac - Ring - Herrera
Sweat - Callens - Brillant - White
SJ

Mikey Lopez in the midfield. Let Herrera play in the 10. I don't want McNamara or Pirlo.

I looked back and Tmac started for Maxi when we dominated RB in NJ. I didn't remember that, but its good enough for him to get the start for me.

curious what asset you think T-Mac has that Pirlo does not possess.

Alright, I'm going to come out and say it. I think we're getting a little too reliant on Villa. Someone's going to need to start producing goals on a more regular basis or else the likelihood of getting through a playoff series remains against us. Hopefully Wallace and Harrison starting together will be better for us going forward. We've really been unlucky to always be down a few of our best.

We haven't had a consistent lineup in months. One guy comes back from injury and another goes out. As long as we make the playoffs with a fresh and healthy team, I'm not worried.

But what you're really crying out for are a few more games where our defenders carry the load with scoring - we got a taste of it from Chanot, Brillant, Callens, and Sweat, and now we want them to chip in every game :)
