This is going to be an incredibly difficult game. Winning this would be one of the most impressive wins all season, but we should be well-rested, nearly fully healed and game-planning for 2 weeks. I really don't know what NE does so well at home, but if we play as well as we did in Chicago, we should at least get a result.

Does anybody know whether teams that play on turf have more of a home field advantage than teams that play on grass? I started compiling home vs. away points but it was time-consuming so I figured I'd ask if anybody else had done it before I went further.

It's a hard thing to analyze. I just eyeballed H/A differential, and realized the teams with the highest variance between home and away are the ones who really stink away, which doesn't tell you much about their home field advantage.
The best home records in order are Toronto, Atlanta, Columbus, New England/Chicago [tie], Houston and NYC. Apart from it being almost all East teams, I don't see a pattern.

It would be difficult to develop a pattern because league wide home field advantage has become rather significant for all teams. 1.901 HPPG vs. 0.862 APPG
Also, you would probably need multiple years to reduce variance. Replace an off day loss with 3 points for a team and you get almost .2 PPG increase. Taking into consideration other variables like early season cold-weather impacts up north, hot weather impacts down south, altitude in Colorado and Salt Lake, unusually large crowds in Seattle and Atlanta among other factors that can easily distort a teams HPPG more significantly than turf, and any data will be difficult to present any patterns.

Only 6 teams use turf, further increasing the impact of variance, and lastly not all of them are the same and could theoretically increase or decrease the advantage.

While we are talking about turf, I was reminded of an article I read recently which has had me terrified about this game. The NFLPA has been complaining about the new fieldturf put down recently (I don't know when) at Gillette stadium.

"Concerned about the new playing surface at Gillette Stadium, the NFLPA has asked the New England Patriots to repair what it believes to be a field that poses an injury risk to players, according to NFLPA assistant executive director George Atallah.

"It's a reminder to all teams that they can't have players on [shoddy] fields," Atallah said.

The NFLPA recently sent its field inspector to Gillette Stadium to inspect the new playing surface, and found the field "borderline actionable."

I'm not sure if any significant work was done to improve the field. I'm also not sure how serious this was, or if it was simplyt the NFLPA blowing hot air at an influential owner.

After witnessing the shitshow that was the game against the Cosmos last season, I have to think a fake surface benefits those who are used to the high bounces and skipping balls.

Nearly fully healed? That's if none of our internationals return from NT duty with an injury. Let's keep in mind that Villa, Chanot, Ring and Herrera already did, so there's precedent.

I wouldn't be surprised if travel has more to do with it. Foxboro is eastern most stadium in MLS.

According to the Finland head coach, he didn't pick Ring because he cannot train, but just plays with pain killers. If true, it's quite worrying for both the player and NYCFC.
