For those of you discussing the lineup, we should discuss the probability that we will play 3 in the back. 3-5-2.

I would love to see Sands in the middle of that 3. Allows him to step into the midfield offensively. Would be a good challenge.

If we go 3-5-2, Berget almost HAS TO start.

I agree Berget has to start tonight and play 90 minutes this way he does not play against Atlanta.

Excited to see what Lewis, but worried PV rolls out a midfield that's incapable moving the ball into spots that will consistently allow Lewis to attack. If the ball gets stuck in the midfield Lewis is going to have to play more D and likely drop deeper on offense removing him from running at people in the final third where he excels and putting him in spots he's less suited for.

I think the reason we've struggled in the open cup under PV is that our play from the back approach requires a very high level of skill from the midfielders. When you swap out even one guy like Ring or Maxi for a player like TMac things fall apart. It really doesn't take much just swapping in players like TMac that are a step slower, consistently take one extra touch and move with slightly less nuance to open up space and we can no longer get the ball upfield.

Assuming we are not going with our 1st choice midfield I'd actually prefer to see Berget start because PV seems more willing to play the long ball when he's on the field. Berget's struggles have been mostly in the box, when it comes to controlling and distributing long balls he's one of the best we've had (granted very its low bar, other than Villa, maybe Mullins? not a long list that bottoms out with Nemec). A team or B team RB is going to press our midfielders like crazy. It's a lot easier for a RB B team to run like crazy and execute a press than it is for our B team to run our typical midfield approach and break the press with crafty passing. 4-3-3 or 3-5-2, put Berget out there, give the defenders and GK the green light to play it long to him and let him flick on to Lewis all game long. That's our best shot to see what the kid can do.

We're at a bit of a disadvantage playing so many internationals up front without domestic replacements. I think, unfortunately, we'll have to burn most of our starters this match and risk having them dead for Saturday. Chanot feels like a must-start in this game because of his green card. I'm not sure I'd bet against this team if Villa and Isi are starting. Telling Ring to stay home and try to hit Lewis or Isi on the wings would be a nice way to try to halt a counter. Play for a goal and then bunker -- it works against NJ and they are missing some key pieces. I'd be surprised if we don't win if we put out something that looks close to our starting XI.

Because Sweat is our only LB right now unless we do a Tinnerholm/SAS outside back combo, I'd like to see Joe Scally play the outside back position along with SAS tonight. Play the kids. Play all the kids.

I brought up the formation change because my understanding is that PV wants to play 3-5-2 va the high press.

Tactically I can see the argument for it but does it make sense from a personnel stand point? Sweat at LB and SAS at RB seem like simple coverage for positions using domestic players.

So NYCFC has 13 players with US citizenship/green cards. All will be in the 18 since there are only five int’l roster spots.

The only other option is to field less than seven bench players.

This is a tough one.

If you go by Schnitzer's chart, then we only have 10 domestic outfield players available tonight - and one of those is Scally. Add the 5 outfield internationals that we can play, and you get 15 outfield players for the 16 that a team would usually carry. And one of those is Scally, and I'm not sure he's with the team right now (does anyone know?).

I am guessing we go 3-5-2, since we had more success that way against the Red Bulls a few weeks back, but I do think a 4-3-3 fits the personnel we have available a little better.

I don't think Ring and Isi get another full run out with Atlanta coming in on Saturday.

If we go 3-5-2, I like Sands playing the hybrid role in the middle. I am a little nervous about Isi on the left, but it is what it is.

We have 4 pure center backs available: 2 domestic, 2 international. With Sands and Sweat in the 18, I think we look there for CB depth and don't burn an international spot for CB.

I like Isi as a bench option if we need a late goal - besides, we only have 1 domestic forward, so we need an international for depth at that position.

Looking ahead to Saturday.
  • Villa rested last weekend, which I assume was intended to let him start the next two.
  • Berget starts tonight, and is a bench option Saturday.
  • Maxi is an issue. He went 90 against Orlando, and we need him against Atlanta. Not sure what we would do without him fronting the midfield though. Maybe Medina or Tommy.
  • Ofori is also coming off 90 against Orlando. Do we start Kwame in this game instead? That sounds like a potential disaster. Might be one reason to go with a 4-3-3, which allows Sands to start in midfield.
  • Sweat was only 45' against Orlando. We can also put SAS on the left if need be.
  • Ibeagha went 90 against Orlando, but if we can get Chanot focused, he can start against Atlanta with Callens.

A 4-3-3 alternative.

Bench: Isi, Ooh Ah!, The Precious, Scallywag, Stork (Hountondji), Stoove, Caldwell

As an alternative to Tommy at LW, I suppose you could put in Berget and remove Isi frobm the 18, but I like the idea of Isi being available off the bench (don't like him starting as I want him for 90' against Atlanta).

I think the first couple of bullets are very good points (not that the others are bad takes).

Regarding Maxi, I wouldn't be surprised to see PV take a shot at Medina at the #10. He has seemed to play well centrally, so it's definitely an option.

I've been calling for this for a while, but I'd really like to see Houndtondji get run out there. A pairing of Chanot and Hountondji is what I think I'd like to see.

If I had my way, I'd go:

3-5-2:
Berget-Villa
Sweat-Medina-Lewis
Ofori-Awuah
Houndtondji-Sands-Chanot
Stuver
Bench: Johnson, Caldwell, TMac, SAS, Scally, Ibeagha, Ring

4-3-3:
Medina-Villa-Lewis
Maxi
Ofori-Sands
Sweat-Houndtondji-Chanot-SAS
Stuver
Bench: Johnson, Caldwell, TMac, Scally, Ibeagha, Awuah, Ring

I think either of those lineups should be good enough to beat NJ with the pieces they are missing and its a good mix of competitive and getting chances to look more at certain guys.

If I could have one guy to choose to see out there tonight, it would be Sands.
